Even Andrew Sullivan, the prominent gay writer who has been hailed as a pioneer, said he was "befuddled" by A&E's suspension of Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson. He called the suspension "preposterous" and "unfair." A&E suspended Robertson on Wednesday for comments to GQ that were deemed to be "anti-gay." "Hes a reality show character, for Petes sake. Not an A&E spokesman," Sullivan wrote on his blog on Thursday. "Hes being fired for staying in character a character A&E have nurtured and promoted and benefited from. Turning around and demanding a Duck Dynasty star suddenly become the equivalent of a Rachel Maddow guest is preposterous and unfair." Sullivan observed that the show is a "kind of celebration of a culture where duck hunting is the primary religion, but where fundamentalist Christianity is also completely pervasive."

A&E should issue an apology and reinstate Phil. The lefties are not only eating their own, they’re nibbling at their own arms. LOL
No. He should change the name of A&E to Anus Entertainment.
Either Sullivan is actually serious or trying to create damage control because “it’s too early for the outright purges” remains to be seen. Heck, Sullivan is one of the biggest BS artists around.
I will also say that I never watched this show, but in solidarity with the DD guys I decided to watch last night. At first I thought “how can anyone watch this silly show?” then I caught myself giggling a few times and was glued. Phil finding just the right turtle for his picky wife was a laugh. LOL
He’s trying to resurrect the LGBT ‘brand’ because lots of semi-mainstreamers have turned on them.
One may agree or disagree with Robertson. But he has the right to speak his mind.
Likewise, A & E has a right to hire whom they want, and fire whom they want. But can they fire/suspend someone for expressing a religious conviction? A religious conviction which opposes A & E’s corporate culture?
If so, then might a Christian organization be justified in firing/suspending an employee/worker who is outspokenly pro-gay?
Seems like the rules, whatever they are, should cut both ways, doesn’t it?
Methinks Andy is concerned about the blow-back the LBGT community is starting to receive from this incident and how far it will set back their agenda. I don’t for a minute believe he’s concerned about A&E’s treatment of Phil.
Looks like the Liberal Thought Police should lay a bit lower until after the next election. Otherwise they won’t have the full 4 years of the Bamsters second term to completely destroy this once great country.
Maybe Duck Dynasty can be replace with one about liberal elites walking around with their noses in the air ... I’m sure people would be lined up to watch. /s
You just described Portlandia, one of the funniest shows on TV. It takes place in Portland and it is a scream! I hope it comes back this year. I could laugh all over again at the old episodes if they don't have any new ones.
I started watching a while back just to see what all the fuss was about. I found myself laughing out loud, and buying a set of Duck Dynasty DVDs.
That was my take on his response as well. The marxist atheists prefer the Fabian approach of gradually destroying your opponent. Sullivan realizes that this frontal attack will leave his ilk bloodied.
Last night, watching Bill O'Reilly squirm over what Robertson said made me wonder how often he's actually READ the Bible!
You didn’t address the main idea of this post: The Robertsons may have legal recourse vis a vis A&E promoting the “character” Phil in their profitable “TV show”.
Are you an attorney who is qualified to say A&E can hire and fire anyone for any reason? Is Louisiana a RTW State? Is the State where A&E is headquartered RTW also?
LOL
By the way... one needn’t be a Christian (or Jew or Muslim) to recognize that the state should not celebrate homosexuality, nor should it normalize it. The most ardent atheist — if he loves individuals and seeks the best for the community, society, and state — will recognize and oppose efforts to normalize homosexuality.
Wow. Andrew Sullivan showing a flash of the insight and common sense that led me to read his blog back in 2002. It’s not enough to get me to back; but it is refreshing.
