... Final say on the 1,177-kilometre pipeline now rests with the federal cabinet, which has 180 days to decide the projects fate.
Gateway, if built, would allow up to 525,000 barrels of oil sands-derived crude to reach new markets in Asia and on the U.S. West Coast. A twinned pipeline would import 193,000 bpd of bitumen-thinning condensate.
Enbridge has said the project could be up and running by 2018, although the company is expecting costs to rise. It said during final public hearings the pipeline could cost $7.9-billion, according to the panel....
Reaction from opponents was swift. Greenpeace vowed on Thursday to do what it takes, from court cases to civil disobedience, to ensure this pipeline never gets built....
Through months of public hearings, Enbridge, Canadas largest pipeline operator, maintained Gateway would help Canada earn more money for its oil. Canadian heavy crude, known as Western Canada Select, has been whacked by steep discounts this year, at times fetching more than US$40 less than the main North American benchmark price....

Note that much of the enviro-lobby and "native" opposition is articially funded by large US liberal-activist groups, including The Tides Foundation.
Despite all the conditions attached - a political necessity - the basic finding of the panel is that the project is technically sound.
I'm not sure I agree with that.
I always thought the Northern Gateway pipeline was an alternative to Keystone XL. Despite all the clamoring here on FreeRepublic about how Keystone would help drive up the supply of oil in the U.S., the main purpose of that project is to increase the capacity of the pipeline system all the way down to the Gulf Coast -- for oil exports from North America.
Obama: More jobs in jobless benefits than Keystone
“President Obama said that he will delay his vacation and keep Congress in session until the passage of his desired payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits extension — two proposals that Obama said would create more jobs than the Keystone XL pipeline that his administration recently delayed.”
The sad part is that America is not going to get the oil or the jobs. The worst part is that the oil and the jobs are going to communist China, America's biggest enemy. In one swoop Obama has been able to:
1. Weaken America
2. Strengthen the Chinese, America's greatest foe
3. Alienate the Canadians, America's greatest ally
It is not easy to do all of these things at once.
Tides is merely a money laundering operation. Historically, the bulk of enviroracketeering money comes from the tax-exempt "charitable" foundations belonging to the major stockholders in big oil companies, particularly the NRDC. They love high prices without risky investments.
False.
For starters, the Keystone XL is an expansion from Canada to Nebraska. The sections continuing south are moving oil without it. Bakken, Eagle Ford, Permian Basin and others have already committed capacity to those pipelines.
Secondly, we are not going to export oil while importing oil from the same locations. We do export a very small amount of oil now, mostly to the closest refinery in Canada.
What it would do, is provide a lower cost and more secure supply for our refineries, compared to importing from OPEC.
He knows exactly what he is doing.
