If there is one thing History has taught us, it is that power corrupts. This inherent human problem is only exacerbated when a group of know-it-all elitists are the ones deciding who gets what power. History did not begin with FDR and it will not end with Obama. The US was wisely started with a desire for a limited government condign to the perpetuation of a nation of free men. We could have thrown it away for a thousand different reasons in the last 200 years, but we didn't. There is no reason to do so now.

King George III wanted no more than that. Brooks wishes we had listed to the wise, old gentleman - and stopped those Tea Party Radicals in their tracks. :)

What the nation needs is a much smaller government that understands it contributes nothing; is a parasite and/or leach that just steals money from its working citizens and businesses and gives it to freeloaders, with politicians being the biggest group of freeloaders.

David Brooks: What America needs now is a stronger presidency with “unified authority”

Indeed!

Funny how David Brooks did not write this during George W. Bush’s Presidency. In other words, he favors a dictator, but only a dictator that suits him. I wonder if he knows that the dictator of his dreams is the one who would put him against the wall.

I’m sure Brooks thought the same thing when Bush was president.

Incomplete. They forgot to add (or deliberately left out): "as long as he is a Democrat".

Brooks is soooo wrong.

In countries with a Prime Minister, they don’t have fixed terms. Instead, a failed vote of “No Confidence” in the Parliament can trigger a new election, which usually results in a different coalition. The government and the Chief Executive have more power, but it can be checked through a No Confidence vote.

Making the President a Caesar for a fixed four year term would be a big mistake. The Founders wisely sought to balance the need for executive power by giving the President enough time to settle in and work, but by structurally inhibiting his reach during that time. Brooks would remove that check.
