I remember one WWII story of an American unit advancing into Germany. They took some sniper fire as they approached so they pulled back and put artillery on the town all night. They didn’t have any more trouble with that town, IIRC.

My great-uncle was in Patton's 3rd Army (6th Armored Division) during the race across France and they ran into a lot of snipers along the way.

They took care of this problem by acquiring (ie stole) some twin 40mm Bofors off some Navy ships at Normandy, mounting them on trucks and half-tracks, and then blowing the begeepers out of any sniper stupid enough to open fire on them.
