The United States named a new Full Admiral in Washington, D.C. Friday--and it's an African American woman. She's will be the first ever female in Naval history to win a fourth star assuming the Senate approves President Obama's nomination. The Navy announced her nomination in an official release.
Vice admiral Michelle Howard,53, is currently the deputy chief of naval operations, plans, and strategy. She will serve as the Navy's second ranking officer, vice chief of naval operations, just a single step below the Navy's top officer, the chief of naval operations.

Everything else is moot...
I'm not qualified to answer these questions...
That fact it is Obama who made these decisions makes her rise suspect, since everything else he does is predicated on ideology rather than competence...
That is an excellent point. For well-qualified minorities, affirmative action is definitely a two-edged sword. Because in the back of some people's minds, there will always be that question...
Suddenly all these black women are more qualified for high positions of authority? Dont think so.
That’s right. Many American lives are at risk.
I don’t know much about such things, but her bio/CV seems rather impressive. We’ll see how she does.
BTW, just out of curiosity: is the pace of her ascension through the rank exception. She went from one-star to three-star (Vice-Admiral) in just five years, and now looks to be picking up that 4th star very soon. Is that unusual, or pretty much par for the course with a successful flag rank (I think that is the term?) officer?
I expect soon the naming of the first woman to be head coach of an NFL team. :)
I don’t know.
Every promotion above O-5 is to some degree a political appointment.
Yeah, sure.
If you want to see the future of the Navy just look at the United States Border Patrol. A once feared and effective organization turned into an utter joke which is now really nothing more than a very expensive welfare program.
The exceptions always pave the way for the rules.
However, are you not aware that our CIC is anti America? His intention it to weaken, not strengthen our military.
Therefore why would we trust ANY move he makes?
Of course not. I haven't watched that propaganda for decades.
In a word, Puppet....
I believe that our currant administration is highly likely to declare patriotic citizens, who want to follow the Constitution as laid out by the founders, as enemies of “Their” state. I base this on their past rhetoric in the belief that evil people will tell you what they intend to do to you if you’ll just listen to them.
I quite agree. But the point is they were civilians, who some around here seem to think should be immune to military action.
And the same of course applies to domestic enemy unlawful combatants. As if those defending us should take the time to determine citizenship status of attackers before responding with appropriate force
I do not dispute your point. But the relevant issue is not whether civilians should be shot or not, it’s whether the military should be shooting people people (civilians or not) without appropriate provocation.
IOW, if you attack a mall in PA like the Somalis did in Nairobi, I sincerely hope the military would not hesitate because the attackers might be American civilians. That is just not relevant.
Similarly, if ordered to open fire on peaceful demonstrators, I hope they would refuse the order, whether those demonstrators were Americans or Afghans.
When a person decides to commit acts of terror against their fellow citizens they cease to be citizens and place themselves outside of the law. At sea they are pirates and on land they are at best brigands and are to be dealt with as such. It’s just that when they hide amongst the people and some people (family, friends) protect them that there is danger of spreading the terror through the heavy-handed use of force.
Would like to stay a discus this more but we’re being offered doubletime for the first time in weeks due to last weeks ice storm and I’m going for it.
