Black students at the University of Minnesota say racial descriptions in crime alerts does not help catch suspects. Instead, it's hurting black male students.
There have been more than two dozen crimes on or near the U this year.
Crime alert after crime alert describes many of the suspects as young black males.

Ian Taylor, a junior and president of the Black Men's Forum, said many of their members have expressed concern over how other students treat them.
"You might walk a certain side of the street and someone might walk the other way or the other direction just this feeling that people feel unsafe around you," Taylor said.
The racial descriptions are leading to racial profiling, according to Amber Jones, president of the U's Black Student Union.

It's racist to say who's committing the crime on campus!
So bro’s, talk to your 0bama peeps and tell them to knock it off.
No, wait.... Tell something else...
Pretty smart thing to do to turn around if multiple young BM’s are walking my direction. Not racism it’s instinct.
The sex and race of the PERPS are the two best clues available!
I am SO offended that they put the gender of the suspect in the crime alerts. That clearly makes ALL males suspects in crimes and makes it difficult for me to go about my daily activities.
They need to put links to their gender non-discrimination policy in their crime alerts, too.
Better yet, they should just make the crime alerts read: “A suspect committed a crime.” That would be completely non-judgmental and fair to all.
Thanks Zakeet.

Statistically, blacks ARE 10 times as likey as whites or Asians to commit violent crimes. If we REALLY wanted to cut violent crime, we would register them, not guns, since it is much more likely that any given black male will commit a crime, than that any given gun would be used in a crime. By like 20 times!
Police should only use stick figures on fliers for “have you seen this guy.”
Why does the University of Minnesota allow racist POSs, like Ian Taylor, president of the Black Men’s Forum, and Amber Jones, president of the U’s Black Student Union, to even be on the campus? Doesn’t the University have to follow sanitation and sewage disposal regulations?
I’ve read several studies over the years indicating a black law enforcement officer was more likely to shoot a black male suspect than a white officer in the same circumstances. There may be a number of issues at work. One is the white officer’s fear of being called racist. Another is fearing the higher level of department and media scrutiny.
I’ve known two black men who were brutally murdered by other black men. I’ve never had a white acquaintance or friend murdered by a white man. But numerous acquaintances were assaulted by black men; including myself; twice.
So, lets resolve the racial angle in this case by announcing the race of all perps. Then, report today’s cumulative stats. That should remove any racial stigma from the reporting.
That might be because people feel unsafe around you. And that might be because, statistically at least, they have a good reason. You might wanna talk to your home dawgs about why ... [HINT: it's not white racism, as much as you'd like it to be.}
Crime Alert
Be on the lookout for the following individual, observed carrying a gun and Molotov cocktail. A description follows:
Report all sightings to the campus police.
Stop the whining, baby crap, and stand up as a race to stop black violence and crime. Every black person in America dances to a drumbeat when a black person is perceived to be wronged by whitey, so admit that these black criminals are wronging black people, and do something. Go Trayvon crazy on them.
I disagree. That would unfairly single out people who happen to be walking alone.
It should read: A suspect, or perhaps a group of suspects, committed a crime. We'd rather not say how large the group was, if even there was a group in the first place.
Interesting you would post his picture Zakeet...
“You might walk a certain side of the street and someone might walk the other way or the other direction just this feeling that people feel unsafe around you,” Taylor said.
You’re damned right they suspect you.
You are the MF’ers doing the knock-out game. Any white that sees a group of blacks coming towards them and isn’t aware is a damned fool.
Blacks have a reputation that is well deserved, and if that hurts their feelings it’s tough Sh&t.
If you want to stop it stop the violence against whites.
Don’t blame them for being aware. They seem to like to pick on the weak—oldsters and old ladies.
It’s all part of the demise of a once great state.
Last week several black groups on campus wrote a letter to President Eric Kaler asking for change. Kaler responded that racial profiling will not be tolerated. He reiterated that on Friday during a board of regents meeting. Kaler said officers won't profile race but they will profile behavior.
IOW they will no longer report that perpetrators are black.
Similarly, I'm not particularly happy that statistics, experience, and common sense tell me that I should feel unsafe around groups of young black men in public.
In the meantime I'll walk on any side of the street I want.
