Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is picking a fight with outside conservative groups to clear the way for immigration reform, Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham charged on Friday.
“The Speaker is trying to turn this into a boring fight between outside groups and himself so we are not having a policy debate about whether or not this is a good deal,” Needham said of the budget deal approve by the House on Thursday.
“The Speaker also wants to clear the way for immigration reform next year,” Needham added in an interview on MSNBC. He said Boehner wanted to divert attention from the substance of the two-year budget deal by picking the fight. Heritage and other conservative groups harshly criticized the deal, saying it actually increased spending instead of cutting it.
The groups also “key-voted” the bill, meaning votes in favor of the legislation will be negatively scored.
Despite the pressure, most Republicans in the House supported the measure, handing Boehner and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who drew up the deal, a significant victory.
During a press conference Thursday, Boehner said outside groups had lost credibility by coming out against the deal before the final details had been released.
He also said they had little credibility because their pressure to tie the defunding of the healthcare law to a government funding bill had led to a government shutdown earlier this year.
The shutdown fight badly hurt Republicans, according to polls at the time. They party has made a comeback since the shutdown ended, partly because of the problems of political focus on the healthcare law.
Boehner also took a shot specifically at Needham, referring to the conservative strategy that led to the government shutdown in October.

I used to be confused by the GOPe leadership’s utter refusal to seriously fight the other side on issue. I used to think they were cowards.
I continue to ask—”What are the Republicans giving to conservatives that will cause us to support them in 2014?”
IMHO, Boner and company are in for a nasty surprise next NOV.

2014 is turning from a historic blow out to a run of the mill mid term. The GOP may pick up a few seats and take the Senate by a razor thin margin but it won’t matter. The budget deal and bystander mode on kenyancare has telegraphed that the GOP have no intention of engaging the kenyan for the remainder of his time in the WH.
Now you are aware that they are both on the same side.
It is my opinion that if the GOP does take the Senate nothing will change.
Now we need primary challengers who'll pull no punches.

Not partly, solely because of the failure of the healthcare law which proved that the Republicans were right about it and the Democrats were wrong.
So, if the focus on the health care law allowed Republicans to reclaim the momentum, why divide the party again before the mid-terms? Is Boehner just an idiot?

The Republicans aren't really going after Obama's illegal decrees vis-a-vis PPACA, because they aren't really opposed to government interference in health care or health care insurance, they just believe they can do it better than the Democrats.
Instead of focusing on shallow things like "brand" they should focus on principles and advance an agenda that is more than just a strategy to retain/obtain office. Championing an agenda, having a cause, is how to attract voters. No one is particularly interested in a politician's strategery to protect his position, it's not about them or their party, it's about Liberty.
Thank you for that reminder. I just clicked on a link from Drudge for an article about how Panetta was going to bring in corporate donations for the Obama administration that went to the NYT. That was as far as I got.
I was interested because I got an email from MoveOn last night that said that individual donors were no longer sending enough money to support the Democrat agenda and that MoveOn was turning to corporate donors, as well.
Of all the RINOs who ever roamed Washington, this guy is among the most repellent.
