Though with kind words for Nelson Mandela and for the speeches given at his tribute, the Daily Mail's David Jones reports from the scene that the event was "a shambles" and embarrassing for the late leader.
In a scathing column for the Mail, Jones laments the empty stadium, the chronic booing of the event's host, and the fact that the ceremony -- four hours long -- began 57 minutes late. "Its my view that yesterdays memorial ceremony for Nelson Mandela not only failed to reflect the towering achievements of the man," he writes, "at times, it was a shambolic disgrace to his name."
Jones notes the stadium, home to the last World Cup, was only two-thirds full. Despite warnings of potentially discordant crowds, "we gazed down upon rows of empty seats" and an "embarrassingly poor" turnout. What's more, he adds, the crowd that was there required disciplining as it booed the image of current South African President Jacob Zuma, the host of the event, whenever he appeared on the jumbotron. The crowd also cheered Mandela's second wife, Winnie, more than his third, Jones recounts.
The crowd played a winners-and-losers game with the guests that made the event "almost like being in a Roman amphitheatre" and "frankly distasteful," writes Jones.

Winnie was the really bad one... I'm surprised Oprah hasn't condemned her crap... or Jackson or Sham-ton... /s
How can they have a funeral for Mandela without at least one person getting a tire necklace?
That is total disrespect.
This just further reinforces my opinion that many leaders adored by leftists as icons of history actually get far more adulation if they’re assassinated in their primes than they get if they wither away and die a natural death. As time goes on, the full impact of their accomplishments (or lack thereof) becomes more clear, and even in a modern, pagan culture there’s something rather odd about having two “widows” sitting up there at a memorial service.
Sooo.. A whole buncha communist leaders get together to celebrate a communist’s death and turn the service into a catcall for people they socially dislike turn it into a party atmosphere for themselves give lip service to diversity (sign interpreter) and leave the peasants outside.
And people are surprised how?
Gandhi is hated in India? Who have YOU been talking to? Gandhi spent most of his final years fighting Partition, so to blame Pakistan on him is absurd. “Credit” for that cesspool belongs to Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
The British Trotskyites are upset that the Stalinist Africans acted like communists. Next time, pass out icepicks.
I was talking to people from India. He made India surrender all this territory to muslims, morally equalizing Hindus with muslim animals.
And I was not talking about the partition. If India had not parted, India would be full moslem by now given how they multiply. Again, Gandhi was fully sponsored to subjugage India behind anticolonialist bull sht.
I bet it was not attendance, it was Hussein’s SS.
Mandela doesn’t deserve kind words, he deserves the farce that this memorial service became.
except a bunch of people should have been necklaced to make it more of an honor to him.
Horsecrap. Gandhi was vehemently opposed to the establishment of a separate muslime nation on the Indian subcontinent. His longest fast, in 1943, was in support of Hindu-muslime unity.
and she is a hero to them.
Winnie was not “the” bad one. Her husband was a terrorist, he even okayed bombings from his prison cell that killed a lot of people.
Hindu-Muslim Unity?
There would be no Hindu’s left by now
Were they blowing their Vuvuzelas the whole time?
I suspect there were very few whites in the stadium.
Gandhi was assassinated because of it.
Besides being pure speculation what does that have to do with anything?
Africa wins again...
Working in a Goldfields / Newmont affiliated mining company with a good number of white South African geologists and engineers, I got a somewhat different view of Mandela. There is no question that he and Winnie were revolutionaries with the blood of many white and black South Africans on their hands. When he went to prison she continued her murderous ways with the ANC youth movement, directing the killing of rather more black African youth than whites.
Nelson slowly changed in prison. When he came out, he had dropped the Maoist revolutionary demands and, still a communist, he was willing to negotiate a gradualist approach. More importantly, he genuinely wanted a multi racial society and could understand the catastrophe of a purging of whites and others. Still not a pretty picture but probably the best for that moment in history.
