A 23-year-old Texas university student was shot dead by a police officer during an altercation in which the unarmed and usually mild-mannered student allegedly assault the officer and asked, Oh, youre going to shoot me?
The officer did in fact shoot him six times, killing him.
Robert Cameron Redus is an honors student at the University of the Incarnate Word, a private Catholic institution in San Antonio, Texas. Reduss friends describe him as not aggressive, gentle, and well-liked, according to local news.
UIW police officer Chris Carter pulled over Redus at 2:00 a.m. on Friday night for unknown reasons. The argument between the two quickly became heated, and Redus attacked, according to an Alamo Heights Police Department press conference. Redus successfully wrestled Carters police baton out of his hands, and started beating him over the head with it.
Carter reacquired the baton, and told Redus that he would open fire if the student refused to surrender. According to Police Chief Richard Pruitt, Redus charged the officer once again, forcing Carter to shoot him.
A neighbor who overheard the exchange said that Redus asked the officer if he was going to shoot.
I heard [a man] say, Oh, youre gonna shoot me? like sarcastic almost, said the neighbor.
Carter fired six times.
Devastated friends described Reduss alleged behavior that night as strange, given the students usual demeanor.
Hes not an aggressive person at all, said Sarah Davis, in a statement to local news. The story just doesnt really make sense to any of us.
The officer in question has been placed on leave pending an investigation. The university said that Carter has an extensive law enforcement background. But according to the San Antonio News, Carter has held eight different jobs in his eight years as an officer.
The police department did not respond to a request for comment.
The street is no place to challenge Police authority. They have a chain of command, which ultimately includes civilians (most importantly, you will not be shot while lodging complaints there).
No police administered @$$ whopping or shooting ever began with "Yes, sir" or "No, sir".
We’re all just speculating now. We need to know more, particularly about the autopsy.
If you're ever in the ABQ area, be very careful in the vicinity of US 550 and NM 528. That area is prowled by six (count 'em) different agencies, to wit:
Bernalillo PD
Sandoval County Sheriffs
NM State Police
Rio Rancho PD
Santa Ana tribal police
Federal Police (BIA)
Okay, you’re correct, I was not there nor do I personally know the cop or his victim. However, based on info regarding what his previous job history is as reported on a number of various websites and the fact the student was UNARMED and in conjunction with what a witness said they heard the student say prior to getting offed, I’d say all of that is enough for anyone to reasonably conclude that this UC cop has Little Tin god syndrome and obviously had no clue of how to diffuse the situation, other than by shooting the UNARMED student, of course. If it sounds to you like I’m talking sh!t, what can I say?
As for anything else all we have to do is wait -- eventually the truth comes out. Just have to be patient enough to wait for it.
Yeah ..
You implied there is a way things work (obversely a way things don't work and a choice must be made)
And you infered the kid beat the cop down.
I think the cop made a mistake when stopping the kid and should have "read" the situation better.
Not gonn'a discuss this anymore ... let's see what developes
The question is, how do we “know” what we know? As far as I can tell, the entire story we have is from the officer’s recollection.
Witnesses seem to only have heard the tail end of the altercation, so the only thing we have that isn’t the officer telling us his story is the witnesses who claim the boy was yelling “are you going to shoot me” right before the officer shot him.
The cop could easily have incapacitated him with a stun gun or other non lethal force.
I have been a prosecutor and defense attorney for the last seven and a half years and I will tell you a cop who have been one for eight years with eight separate agencies is nothing but trouble.
They are referred to by respectable LEOs as gypsy cops.
Also, I have seen far worse where the cops successful used non lethal tactics to stop the threat.
And a couple of times it was a good thing because the suspect had been slipped a drug without their knowledge and went totally out of character.
This result can’t be undone no matter what is learned in the aftermath.
Withou video to show what happened or at least a non LEO eyewitness
all we have is the word of a badgemonkey......one with a work history
that wou!d make a fast food employer likely pass on handing him a job.
LEO lie....routinely, daily and as a matter of policy. There are even
classes taught on how LEO can lie more effectively in order to fool
subjects in falling for the BS the badgemonkeys spout in order for
them to gain an advantage over people. Only a fool would think
that they don’t use the same form of “LEO Taqqiya” on a regular basis,
especially when their neck is on the line.
All citizens MUST assume that ANYTHING a badgemonkey says is
a lie unless it can be independently corroborated.
I did?
The kid was obviously capable of taking the cop down and the cop was given a chance to walk away, but no-oooo-oooo ...
You wrote that not me.
Let's see now, the officer escapes an attack by the student and he is supposed to walk away.....don't know much about being arresred, do you....and yes, he was the boss.....anyone with a gun is the boss!

Really? Refusing to surrender is a capital offense?
And you actually believe that the officer is weak enough to have his own baton taken and be beaten with it, but yet is suddenly strong enough to take it back (and not use it), and then is too weak to subdue the now-unarmed kid, and does not think to wait for back-up against the unarmed kid whom is not running? Sorry, his story is full of holes larger than the ones he murdered the kid with.
Pretty ignorant of history, logic, and the pathology of bullies with badges, ain't ya?
I Googled police beating "yes sir" and there is no shortage of stories.
Pehaps; intoxication is certainly a possibility. My initial post was an immediate response to the "lumps on the head" point, and prior to reading the source article.
Now that I have read the article, it appears the question is indeed pertinent:
- the stop reportedly was because of erratic driving (at 2am),
- the pursuit may have come to an end when it did only because the kid pulled into his own parking lot;
- he had spent the evening celebrating.
Whether the shooting was justified may require a trial. In any event, many of us know that an intoxicted young male who is new to drinking may not think twice about launching on a substantially larger and sober male.
I’ve used it in some of the most represive regimes in the “Free” world, Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt in addition to many US States. Your attitude going in usually sets the tone for the event.
According to the newspapers they were several miles from the campus and on a major public street.
and had already wrestled the baton away from the cop once.
Yep and I suspect at this point the cop wasn’t going to get into a wrestling match
over the pistol. He may have lost that one also.
How many drunks will one officer encounter in his whole carrer? How many are killed? Your scolding lands short of the obvious situation.
