Texas Lt. Governor: We Shut Down the Border Ourselves
breitbart.com ^ | 12/7/13 | Brandon Darby

Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst announced a Texas-led three-week effort that he says reduced illegal immigration, smuggling, and human trafficking to a standstill in the Rio Grande River section of the U.S./Mexico border.

The Lt. Governor spoke with me in an interview for Breitbart News; he stated: “In the Rio Grande Valley sector, nearly nothing moved in those three weeks. We shut it down. We had teams of Texas law enforcement in the brush, high altitude aircraft, gun boats, and more," he explained. “Our intel revealed that the Gulf cartel was growing frustrated with our three-week effort.”

“The border issue is just about dollars and cents,” Dewhurst said. “This proves Texas can do the job the federal government has refused to do — to invest in the border and shut it down from illegal activities that are hurting Texans and other Americans.” He added: "Texas will protect our own citizens and other Americans from the criminal gangs that are destabilizing our state and our nation.”

The plan, according to Dewhurst, was to do a three-week operation with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) as the tip of the spear. He said the effort cost approximately $5 million each month. “We are fixing to appropriate more money,” he said. The Lt. Governor is seeking an additional $60 million to be approved by the State Legislative Budget Board.

Dewhurst stated, “We started appropriating money to plug the holes that exist in the border. We’ve allocated hundreds of millions, as a state, since 2008.” He added: “Nearly 796 million of state money, not a dime federal, has been allocated by the State of Texas to plug the holes in our border. This covers things like over-time for Sheriffs’ deputies, equipment, and Texas Rangers SWAT teams.”

It has ALWAYS been that way ... let the states free to patrol THEIR OWN border.

I never understood why border states waited for the fed to do ANYthing.

The Bandit wars helped to bring more recognition to the Texas Ranger.

A State has always had the authority to defend invasion. But, most .gov care not about the lives of their citizens.

The Federal government is not enforcing the laws and not doing its job. This is an impeachable offense for all of those involved.

Regarding the Texas border initiative. I doubt it was effective as claimed, but I think it is still worth the extra 5 million dollars/month to increase border security. 60 million dollars/ year compared to the rest of the Texas budget is a fairly small amount, especially when you consider that public safety is the first duty of any government at any level.

This is the guy Sen Cruz beat in the Senate primary. he is Perry’s LtG and a huge Bushy, if I am not mistaken.

He is full of it, here.

He Should shut down the border and should have a long time ago, which is why he should actually leave the public arena.

but this is just like Cornyn advertising himself as a “conservative” after defying Cruz all along and during the ‘defund Obamacare’ Campaign, before which Cornyn would not answer any of his phones, the day of the vote which spurred the filibuster.

These guys are talking, that’s all.

One of the things that brought about the formation of the Rangers was the constant threat from the Comanches. In the beginning, the Rangers were getting thumped. They decided that if they were going to have a chance at fighting the Comanches, they had to train like them. That, plus the introduction of the six shot revolver, began to work. Then the Civil War came, and the Rangers were not available to fight the Comanches. After the Civil War, the United States Army took up the task and the Comanches were defeated.

If a man was Ranger tough, he was Comanche tough. Definitely NOT a man to mess with!

... let the states free to patrol THEIR OWN border.

Totally agree. But, people in OK to KY and NY, are being protected by the efforts of Texas and the other border states. So Texas, and those other border states, should not have to bear 100% of the financial burden for protecting the rest of the country,.

The Texas Rangers number 144 commissioned officers, one forensic artist, one fiscal analyst and 24 civilian support personnel, for the entire, large state of Texas.

Why not?

We're united, not the same.

Detroit makes cars,(welll .. they USE'TA .. ),Kansas makes corn, California grows oranges, etc.

I think border patrol should be part of a state budget.

The action costs $5 million a month.

How much does it ‘save’ in benefits illegals would receive, if they managed to cross? Probably much more than $5 million a month.

GW Bush, McCain, Romney, Obama — all said it couldn’t be done.

All it took was the will to do it.
