EX-OFFICIAL SAYS FBI CAN SECRETLY ACTIVATE AN INDIVIDUALS WEBCAM WITHOUT THE INDICATOR LIGHT TURNING ON
The FBI can secretly activate a computers webcam to spy on an individual without turning on the indicator light, a former official revealed to the Washington Post in an article published Friday.
According to the Washington Posts account of what Marcus Thomas former assistant director of the FBIs Operational Technology Division in Quantico said, The FBI has been able to covertly activate a computers camera without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording for several years, and has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigations.

I put a band-aid on my cam.
Hackers can too.
From what I have heard lots of websites can activate your webcam.
I have a little (very thick lol) picture of Obama covering the lens on my laptop webcam. He’s always looking at me...
I remember back in the Firetalk days I would tell people that I had software that turned their computer screen into a camera lens and I was watching them...
Naturally no one believed me or any of the other nonsense we posted to each other back in the day.
When a kid in Romania does it, it’s illegal.
How does this become legal?
A - it doesn’t.
I uninstalled cameras at the OS and put tape over camera
Same with Mic.
Don’t use em anyway.
Not if I unplug it.
Thanks! Other than driving, I’m now able to do most things I used to. Will be back to driving again too if I get hand controls installed on my van. Who needs legs (that were already almost useless anyway)?
Holy mackerel.
Heck, remember the school that was monitoring kids via the school-issued laptops?
Just aim the camera at a picture of a gorgeous nekked girl and the FBI will be one of your favorite intruders.
I believe the Intel badge also works well.
“Intel inside”.
Just saying.
My solution as well.
I wonder about phones.
Front and back cams..
The eye will get poked out shortly.
I don’t have a web cam either but it would do my heart good to know that some little so and so snoop had to watch me sitting in front of my puter with no make up on eating an apple and typing wise azz remarks about Dear Leader in FR. :-)
Of possible interest to your list.
I could disable the mic, but all that it would pick up is ESPN (actually CBS Sports at the moment). It’s easier for the FBI to just to tune in to the game.
I’m assuming this article is referencing computer webcams.
I wanna know if they are accessing mobile device cameras. My iPad and phone have cameras that face each direction and would imagine they’d be more plentiful and useful than a computers webcam.
Folks need to know how to protect their computers, relatively speaking.
The problem with that is the warrant criteria for terrorism cases and what is considered terrorism. Should I tape over my camera if I am part of a radical home schooling cell or raw milk faction?
