South and Midwest blasted by bitter Winter storm as snow and ice grounds hundreds of flights

A biting Winter storm has blasted the South and Midwest with ice and snow - leaving more than a quarter of a million people without power, grounding hundreds of flights and causing treacherous conditions for travelers.

Two people have died in traffic accidents on roads in Texas, where temperatures plunged below freezing on what residents dubbed 'Ice Friday'.

Schools in the state canceled classes as temperatures plunged below freezing and thousands of shoppers jammed stores to buy milk, pet food and other supplies.

A quarter of a million Dallas residents are without power as well as 35,000 people in Arkansas.

American Airlines and American Eagle, based in Fort Worth, canceled nearly 1,000 flights due to bad weather in Texas, while Southwest Airlines canceled almost 90 flights.

Earlier this week, many in Texas were basking in spring-like temperatures hitting the 80s, but by Thursday, Texas was facing the same wintry blast that's hitting much of the U.S., bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm and ice warnings through much of Friday for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

On the SE NM caprock, right now 25F, it will dip to about 15F tonight. A lot of ice from the last couple days around the area, expecting some snow on Saturday.

My people are all in Western Oregon, where they have seen 8" or so of snowfall today. That is a lot more than a typical Western Oregon snow episode. They are expecting to dip to about 5F tonight or Saturday night.

Not as cold as the upper Midwest or the Rockies, but cold enough for me!

“uh did we say global warming for 30 years, uh we meant climate change, that's the ticket any change and it's capitalism's fault.”

Yep. I read something where the Warmers were discussing the 'pause' in global warming today. They're still scratching their heads and wondering how thermometers could all be so far off their perfect computer models.

Gotta be all that extra carbon coming from smokestacks and tailpipes affecting the mercury in those devices.

Thankfully here in middle TN we only got rain.

Well, do keep an eye out anyway. The storm track looks like it's just barely touching Memphis, but you never know with these things.

I got out of DFW a few hours before the storm hit. Now I am enjoying the warmth of Puerto Vallarta.

What? Dude, you just got here. I expect you to do some serious sweating and freezing to earn your Texas immigrant status! :-)

It’s dissapated. Now it’s going to get bitterly cold. Clear Sat but back to rain on Sun.

Yep. Apparently, North Texas will get down to about 16 tonight, with a wind chill below zero. That's way unusual for us, this time of year. We normally don't see weather like this until February.

Global Chilling, anyone?

Um, the South hasn’t been blasted, at least not yet.

I guess news writers in London consider Texas to be part of the South. Politically, I suppose it is, but technically it's part of the Southwest. Or Midwest.

Oh hell....I don't know .. LOL

Unofficial State moto is helpful here: "Texas is a whole 'nother country."

And its corollary: "Don't mess with Texas."

Indeed. That's one of the reasons I moved here. It reminds me of the America I was born in.

Drove back to Houston from Pottsboro the day before Thanksgiving. About 2 a.m. ran into a horrible snow storm for about 20 miles while heading south on 75 to Dallas. Nothing was sticking but sure surprised me and made that drive on 75 even more interesting. I thought traffic was bad in Houston but Dallas area has to take the cake. Texhoma is an awesome lake. Wish the weather would have been better while we were up there so we could have enjoyed it a bit.

I haven’t been to Houston since I passed through there on a cross country trip years and years ago. I know that it rivals DFW for size and density, so I assumed the traffic there is just as bad (or worse) than it is here in Dallas. I’m surprised to hear that it isn’t.

We’ve been here eight years now, and I can tell you that the traffic is denser than it was when we first moved here. It’s amazing how fast this place is growing.

Speaking of Texoma, my wife and her girlfriends just spent a three day weekend up there about a month ago. It was pretty much the tail end of the warm weather and they loved every minute of it.

Tomorrow morning in central Oklahoma, we are predicted to reach the lowest temperature in December since records were started being kept in 1890. We are also on track for the coldest December in thirty years.

Dumb Yankee! (lol)

It's a normal average December here in Florida.
Average temperature up to a high of 79 in mid afternoon, dropping down to a chilly 65 at night!
For some reason, it happens every year around this time, plus or minus 10 degrees.

We get very cold here in Jan-March.
Sometimes it drops below 32 and only rises to 40.

Ma'am, I don't mind you calling me dumb, but calling me a Yankee is a whole 'nother thing :-)

Yeah, I lived in your fair state for about a year, and know the weather patterns out there pretty well. They're not too terribly different from what we get here in North Texas, except we ain't got them nice beaches.

It’s not supposed to make 55 here today, after having been near 75 yesterday late afternoon. ATL-area.

Some times I think I didn’t go far enough south. But I sure don’t miss the announcements of “exposed flesh freezes in one minute”. Words to live by.
