A biting Winter storm has blasted the South and Midwest with ice and snow - leaving more than a quarter of a million people without power, grounding hundreds of flights and causing treacherous conditions for travelers.
Two people have died in traffic accidents on roads in Texas, where temperatures plunged below freezing on what residents dubbed 'Ice Friday'.
Schools in the state canceled classes as temperatures plunged below freezing and thousands of shoppers jammed stores to buy milk, pet food and other supplies.
A quarter of a million Dallas residents are without power as well as 35,000 people in Arkansas.
American Airlines and American Eagle, based in Fort Worth, canceled nearly 1,000 flights due to bad weather in Texas, while Southwest Airlines canceled almost 90 flights.
Earlier this week, many in Texas were basking in spring-like temperatures hitting the 80s, but by Thursday, Texas was facing the same wintry blast that's hitting much of the U.S., bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm and ice warnings through much of Friday for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

Didn’t see a recent weather related thread, so I thought I’d put this up so folks can check in with each other.
I noticed.
Me too. Our power went out at 5AM this morning, and didn't come back until 2PM. Got pretty cool inside the house.
Um, the South hasn’t been blasted, at least not yet.
Cloudy and 65 here in Ga. Been raining for a couple
of days.
I got out of DFW a few hours before the storm hit.
Now I am enjoying the warmth of Puerto Vallarta.
If I am lucky the storm will last longer and I will be “stuck” here (planning on returning through DFW to Toronto on Sunday).
the news media and scientists have been lying for 30 years crying “global warming”
the government funded this hoax and also lied for 30 years
It’s in the 70s outside, here in tropical North Carolina, and 83 in my dining room. I am NOT freepin turning on the freepin AC in December!
Just plain cold and cloudy here.
Still have power but not out of the woods yet...wind chill down to Zero tonight. Here you see my stately Live Oak bending under the weight of the ice and threatening to remodel the second floor. It's seen many Spring and Winter storms, so I've got my fingers crossed it will endure again. I love this tree!
Almost tropical here, looked like a Gulf hurricane
was about to hit. I didn’t see anyone wearing a coat
when I was out and about todaay.
This morning working outside, hot, 80's and humid, sweating up a storm.
Right now, 44, strong north wind and temp dropping like a rock.
It's 'climate change'.....'climate change'. You got that, comrade?
its not just the south and midwest....
embrace your inner global warming...meanwhile, my husband is getting more wood in....
Yikes!
A number of years ago, a snow storm brought down half of a 60 foot tree that stood right next to our house. Fortunately, the half that came down was on the side facing away from the house.
Took me and the boys half a day to cut it up into firewood.
It was gusty here earlier today, but now it’s dead calm. Last I saw, the weather-guessers were guessing 40-ish on Sunday, and it might rain.
It's cold here in the South.
Can Al Gore get down here and warm things up for us?
Thanks for thinking of us, Cajun. We’re good - just frozen in for the next few days.
We were sweating at work yesterday in 81 degree heat. Tried to get as much done as possible, as we knew this cold was coming. The real bummer is that we have to reschedule all our work for the next two weeks.
Thankfully here in middle TN we only got rain. Cold and windy rain for sure but no ice or snow.
LOL!
Don't I wish I could. We finally got electricity back about four hours ago. Thank goodness. The temp was dropping about a degree every fifteen minutes inside the house. Would'a been real miserable for the family if Ercot hadn't got the power back up.
