Tom Pauken, former chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission and former head of the state Republican Party, withdrew from the Texas gubernatorial race.
Pauken had struggled to raise money against a well-financed Greg Abbott.
The following statement is excerpted from a letter the Pauken campaign sent today to donors and supporters:
Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings, and I have much to be thankful for with such a great family and so many wonderful friends. The past month has made that even clearer and more dear to me. I want to thank you personally for your gracious and generous support of my campaign for Governor and the future of Texas. It is deeply appreciated.
Thanksgiving week also gave me the opportunity to reflect on where we were in the campaign and what we should do, going forward. Filing deadline is only days away, and I have to be realistic about our prospects. When I first filed our exploratory committee in March, I said at the time that there were certain, minimum objectives we needed to achieve to win the Republican nomination: (1) We had to raise a minimum of $2 million; (2) We had to build a strong, statewide organization; (3) We had to develop a major social media presence in a short period of time.
Even though I have worked hard to get our message out across the state the past six months, unfortunately we are nowhere near where we need to be financially and organizationally to win this race. And, the primary is only three months away. I can no longer in good conscience ask friends and fellow conservatives to continue to help me when there appears to be no realistic path to victory. Greg Abbott has a $25 million war chest and the media depicts

He should have run against CORNYN
I agree with that sentiment
Yeah, a lot of people asked him to run for Senate. It would have been an interesting rematch. He told them no, he was only interested in the governor’s office. I think he would’ve gotten a lot of support.
I wonder if this means Tom Jr. (TexGrill) is going to disappear from FR lol
Tom Pauken is actually a true blue Reaganite.

I don’t know about Jr :p

I kinda like Abbott. Have to see how he stands on issues, but he’s better than a damned Democrat link Wendy O Davis the abortion queen.
Abbott blew it when he opposed the AA/United merger
If this race is between Abbott and Windy and it isn't a cakewalk for Abbott, Texas is in serious trouble.
Greg Abbott is a strong firearm defender of our right to our firearms and we are safe from federal messing with our firearm rights if he is Governor. I was just reading on FR about New York City sending letters to owners of rifles that hold more than four cartridges, telling them to turn them in or get them altered or send them out of state. All those rifle owners should move to Texas and let New York City implode with only criminals having firearms. Note, handguns aren't mentioned in this particular firearms grab.
I'm not sure - can anyone even have a handgun in New York City? Maybe they are already outlawed.
Back to Pauken: Good riddance to wimpy, lost every office he tried to win, and was the worst Texas Republican State Chairman we ever had - caused a split in the party and racked up debt for the party as people wouldn't give money to the party due to his being the chairman and the Republican governor wouldn't take his calls. My husband being the county chairman, and I, lived through that time with Pauken as state chair, and it was really, really, bad. Susan Weddington took over as state chair and money started rolling in and we became the great, united, party with every state office holder being a Republican.
Greg Abbott is my choice for Governor to keep Texas as a great state for conservatives.
I’m voting for Abbott.
Notice how every second amendment pic Abbott has is with a rich man’s over-under shotgun? Never seen with a pistol ( like Jerry Patterson) or assault rifle (like Rick Perry). It’s code for I’m a moderate on gun rights. Shotguns aren’t what’s under threat from gun control nuts.
He already did. His FR account is closed.
Hey, hey, hey..... That'd be Wendy. I'm the only Windy around this here joint.
Thank you!
Since when is a pistol for the common man and a shotgun is a rich man's weapon? You are trying to degrade Abbott for some reason - this tactic won't work. Do you have a problem with someone having a lot of money? You sound like Hussein, the man living in the White House. I believe the richest man who is a Texas elected official is Lt. Gov. Dewhurst.
You say, “It's code for I'm a moderate on gun rights.” You are demented. I guess you don't have a “rich man's” shotgun. What you say is ridiculous.
Thank God... he was as annoying as heck :/
What happened to send him out, btw?
