MOSCOWThe space race may be over but Russia hopes the smartphone race has just begun.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was among the first to receive a YotaPhonethe countrys first foray into the hyper-competitive smartphone marketand was told industry pace-setter Apple Inc. better watch its back.
Is Apple concerned about our smartphone? he asked Sergey Chemezov, the head of Russias state-run defense corporation, Rostec, who gave him the phone on Wednesday hours after it hit the market.
Definitely, Mr. Chemezov replied, according to a transcript of the exchange posted on the governments website.....

hmmm eink on one side, droid on the other...
lol. Two screens, and unturnoffable.
The screen always sees you, Winston.
I can see the use of an e-ink screen on a cell phone.
It’s designed to let you read information without the same strain on your eyes that a back-lit LED screen gives you.
I think it is a niche device for Russian market, just like dashcams.
If you were there you can see millions of people all of them reading while traveling on public transit.
Android and Apple devices are versatile, but battery life suck to both read and communicate and many people has to carry two devices (smartphone and e-ink reader) in a crowded environment. Not they can ditch it for one gadget.
I don’t think it is practical as a single screen. E-inc is absolutely unsuitable for dynamic pictures in both refresh rate and picture quality. Let alone a benefit of energy consumption is only working for static pictures.
dashcams seem to be almost everywhere in Russia and some other countries. Guess you need proof when something happens.
I agree, but I’m not thinking of it in terms of running videos or anything that needs a frequent refresh rate, but rather emails or documents.
Apparently in Korea dash cams could become mandatory soon

Yota Internet service sucks. Don’t know about the phone...
YotaPhone? Good to see the little green guy with big ears got into something lucrative after his stint as a Jedi Master.
499... or about $700..
Not too much by European standard. IPhone prices well over $1,000 there.
In fact, cable guy, Apple was awarded the patent for the technique on MAKING the curved touch screens. They invented it. It’s probably the one being used by Samsung and others including Yotaphone under license to MAKE their curved screens, since the technique looks pretty straight forward. Contrary to your misinformation, that IS what Apple does. They develop and license manufacturing techniques. They don’t necessarily use everything they develop for their own products. There is a licensing division.Apple did show the judge in the Samsung patent infringement trial some prototype iPhones with curved screens. . . so the technique was developed some time back.
