Former Vice President Dick Cheney said he was surprised that his daughter Mary, who is a lesbian, publicly attacked her sister Liz on Facebook over her views on same-sex marriage.
We were surprised that there was an attack launched against Liz on Facebook, and wished it hadnt happened, Cheney said Tuesday during an event at the National Press Club to promote his new book. Its always been dealt with within the context of the family and frankly thats our preference.
Cheney declined to address the subject further, telling the moderator, dont waste your time.
The Cheney sisters very public feud began last month when Liz Cheney, who is running against Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., in the Republican primary, saidon Fox News Sunday that while she loves her sister, who is openly gay, the subject of same-sex marriage is just an issue on which we disagree.
After the comments, Mary Cheney's spouse, Heather Poe, responded with an angry note on Facebook that read, "Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 - she didn't hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us. To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least." Poe also alluded to criticism aimed at Liz Cheney for running for the Senate in Wyoming even though she hasn't lived there in recent years, saying, "I can't help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other."

Should come as no surprise. That is todays America. If one speaks what he or she thinks or believes then someone will offer a comment about how ignorant or stupid you are. The truth hurts and today no one should be required to hurt.
He shouldn’t be. For years his gay daughter has been steeped in the gay attitude that tolerance is not enough. Anyone not 100% on-board with the agenda is subject to full-frontal assault. Be they family members or otherwise.
He is not alone in this. There has to be hundreds of thousands of parents facing this issue.
“Bedfellows make for strange politics.” Nelson Rockefeller, 1960’s, after his wife publicly disagreed with him on some policy issue.
IIRC, it was actually the lezzie partner to the lezzie sister that caused this.
Liberal gays are incapable of keeping quiet about their groin-oriented lives, and will throw anyone under the bus in its pursuit.
Notice that it is the Deviant member of society that is publicly attacking her(his?) sister on Facebook.
What do you mean? Explain.
No, this is real. Liz was openly quoted as lenient toward lesbian “marriage” early on, for the sake of her sister, and does now have need, politically, to back away from it.
The parents openly supported it in the same vein, to the surprise of many, when it struck their family.
The Cheneys don’t strike me as particularly grounded in devotion to faith, but my bet is they do abhor the whole stinking gay/lesbian thing, feeling forced to support “equalty in marriage” for the sake of Mary. Ick.
I like Liz on policy, believing she is a dependable and intellegent conservative. Can she upset Enzi? Hope so.
Carpetbagger Liz has to try to make herself seem more conservative than Enzi, so she will run to the right on every issue.
You mean, “shoot her” or something?
I’m in northern Colorado, and I like to watch the news from Cheyenne and Casper. Liz is already putting on a very aggressive campaign.
Dick Cheney should have publicly stated he loves his daughter and always will. But her public actions have brought shame and disgrace to the family and he cannot support her.
I think where things went wrong is when Liz and the family showed support for Mary. Did they go to their "wedding"? I would not have.
The statements in your post tend to reinforce my initial suspicion that this is all a political ploy to back away from a prior position that she now feels could hurt her politically.
Factual error.
That’s a good option. I like that.
Just go hunting with dear old dad.
LOLOL.
IIRC, her name was “Happy.”
I remember that morning well. It was a Saturday and I was watching TV, Mrs. Liberty slept in. When she came into the Living Room, I said, “Hey, Dick Cheney just shot some guy in the face.”
A good friend from Florida, who was once a big-named poster on FR, was really mad that the Bush White House didn’t make a big whoopdedo over it, said Bush was “hiding something.” His anger surprised me and pretty much ended out friendship.
5000+ years of Judeo-Christian culture....
So the gay agenda trumps family - immoral choice. Very few things should come before family, and the gay political agenda is not one of them.
I have a couple of gay cousins. I love them both, and we have discussed our differences of opinion. Just like those differences I have with other family members, it doesn’t change my familial love for them.
Mary needs to figure it out - Liz, Dick and Lynn appear to understand...and are still attacked and humiliated because of legitimate differences of opinion. Sad.
