David Horowitz, author of The Black Book of the American Left and the founder and president of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, has spoken at length about how he was raised by card-carrying communists who always described themselves as progressives. He followed in their footsteps, becoming one of the founders of the New Left in 1960′s, which he described as an organization formed by children of communists who wanted to get away from the taint that Stalin had put on (communism), and revive the vision.
So what made the born-and-raised communist become the staunch conservative and defender of American liberties that he is today? Among other things, he explained on the Glenn Beck Program Tuesday, it was a deadly encounter with the Black Panthers.

“I really have no use for these people when they get transformed in their 40s. I became a conservative at age 30-1984. Reagan was running for reelection and I was transformed. Something tells me its opportunism.”
I have been a conservative since I was 14. I dont trust anyone who converted after 18. Opportunist. :-)

You were raised by commies....
Your comment jarred me. Why would you say such a thing? It's so gratuitous and cruel. Perhaps you should read again what donmeaker wrote: his parents are in their 80's. While you're at it, take a lesson from him; a lesson in kindness.

A simple question. Was he raised by commies? Doesn’t reflect badly on him, not a hard question.

When Lenin set out to transform, fundamentally transform Russia, he didnt say he was going to kill 40 million people, create famines and concentration camps called gulags, Horowitz remarked. He said he was going to give them bread, land, and peace. If people would cooperate with the Master Mind Plan these measure would not be needed!
If Congress won't act, I will. We can't wait.

All I had to do was read a little Milton Friedman and a little Solzhenitsyn and I was “fundamentally transformed”.

You didn't ask a simple question. You made a cruel statement. But you're right about one thing; it doesn't reflect badly on him. It reflects badly on you.
Aging, infirmed parents are given a lot of leeway especially when the child is an adult able to think for themselves.

Donmeaker is not shy about discussing his personal life, it was just a curiosity thing. He was right not to confront his aging parents. How about this, just drop it.

I am not the one proclaiming that my father was a union organizer.... Actually, what you are proclaiming is how little you know.
Poster, "donmeaker," said his 80 year old dad was a "shop steward" not a union organizer. "Shop stewards" are typically elected to and serve by fellow members in their posts once a union is already established and in place. A "union organizer" by contrast is a hustler trying to establish a union where one does not exist.
By your own measure, if donmeaker's father was a "commie" then Ronald Reagan himself was a "commie" since he was at one time not a mere "shop steward," but the elected HEAD of the Screen Actor's Guild.
"central_va:" speaking as a proud VCU graduate and former Virginian myself, clearly you are today's least informed thread idiot.
Unfortunately, it's people like you who routinely fail to recognize who the REAL "commies" are.

Having never been in a union or really know anyone in a union, with the exception of the pilots union, I know very little about them.

he was raised as "red diaper" baby, he had an intellectual
