Ice Everywhere, But No Hockey Sticks [Mark Steyn]
National Review ^ | 12/2/2013 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 12/02/2013 11:40:01 AM PST by Servant of the Cross

News from Santa’s Grotto:

Global warming hysterics at the BBC warned us in 2007 that by summer 2013, the Arctic would be ice-free. As with so many other doomsday predictions by warmists, the results turn out to be quite the opposite.

Meanwhile, down the other end at Santa’s summer vacation condo:

Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.

Antarctic ice is now at a 35-year high. But scientists are “baffled” by the planet’s stubborn refusal to submit to their climate models. Maybe the problem with Nobel fantasist Michael Mann’s increasingly discredited hockey stick is that he’s holding it upside down.

Well, all I can add is that today it’s 78 degrees deep in the heart of Texas! (but that’s not at all unusual for us)

Shouldn’t ice (in general, over the range from absolute 0 to near freezing) expand as it gets warmer?

“The global cooling hypothesis may have been right after all, they say. Earth may be entering a new Little Ice Age.”

If we're really lucky, it will be a "Little Ice Age". We're actually thousands of years overdue for a "Big Honking Ice Age".

When there are global warming discussions on other forums, be sure to insert a sentence or two about “indictments for science fraud” in there.

The Man Made Glow-bull Warming hysterics are starting to sweat around the collar; not with the idea that they are wrong about MMGW, which many of them never believed in, in the first place, seeing it as “means to an end”; but about the idea that they might have to pay in someway for the scam they inflicted on others.

Paul R. Ehrlich, of the previous “population bomb” scam, got away with it, and is still heralded by the MMGW crowd, because nobody ever got the ball rolling that he should properly be wearing prison stripes and sharing a cell with someone named Tyrone, or at least some white collar criminal.

So hold their feet to the fire now, by planting the seed that “No global warming equals prison time”, or at least the loss of scientific credentials.

There’s a few hundred or even thousands of them who need to start contemplating the “sound of jail doors clanging”.

Not significantly as the added heat is latent heat of liquefaction used to break the molecular bonds that hold water in the ice state.
The bonds then broken, ice will turn into a smaller volume of water. You can prove this to people who say if the ice caps melt the sea will rise by filling a class half full of water and half ice. the ice will float on top. Mark the level of the water and then let the ice melt. where is the water level now?

I’ll tell you why.

Because the news bureaus and the news itself primarily comes out of two places - New York and Washington.

They get a couple hot days, the garbage starts to stink worse, and all the sudden it’s the hottest it’s been in ten thousand years.

I mean even more than it usually stinks in those places...

I was talking about ice in its solid state.

i recognize that ice floats.

Not by 35%. Ice has a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion, about 50 parts per million per degree C. At the margins, much, much more ice will melt by a one degree rise in global temperatures than the minuscule 50 ppm or about 100 ppm in area (1 + a) x (1 + a) = 1 + 2a + a^2, but a^2 <<< 2a, to about 100 ppm (0.01%) per one degree rise due to expansion, much, much greater loss due to melting.

According to the Climate Change Channel this weekend, the weak Atlantic hurricane season was due to “unprecedented” warm high pressure off the coast of Africa this summer, LOL.

You should do that experiment for us. Freeze some purified water at absolute zero for us. Measure it's frozen volume. Now bring it back up to O degrees Celsius. Re-measure the volue. Does it grow by 60%?

Ping me when you post your report. Also, remind us how it's relevant to the polar ice cap expansion. :o)

If you were kidding, please disregard this smart reply.

The maximum density (minimum volume) of water is at 4 Degrees Celsius. It expands on heating or cooling!

Yeah, if we're lucky it will only be a 'little' one. A warming climate is much better for humans than a cooling one. Warming means longer growing seasons, amongst other things. During the last major glaciation, NYC was covered with a mile of ice.

Come to think about it, the country could probably actually be improved a bit with that particular situation.

A genuine ice age would mean the death of most of the civilized part of the planet on a massive scale.
