Emergency trucks rushing to County Road 418...an oil plant has reportedly exploded. Reports up to 90 miles away of houses being shaken.
If the log cabin had a basement and propane, propane is heavier than air. Basement could have filled with vapor from a leak until it encountered an ignition source, and then KABLAM!
That was my thinking.
It had a basement according to reports, and it did use propane.
Paint plant explosion in Danvers MA some years ago right around this time of yr felt for many miles around. Houses damaged, windows broken miles away, no fatals or injuries as many were asleep (windows broken but people lying in bed not standing). Yeah, 40-50 years ago if someone heard a loud “bang” around here they would attribute it to a dynamite shack going up. People had dynamite shacks. Think about that today. Back in the day people routinely used the stuff to move rocks and such. Dynamite was regularly used in the building of tanks (what people might call “ponds” in other parts of the country) as routine. You blasted your tank, you didn’t dig it.
If one had a dynamite shack today it would be an FBI/ATF/CIA nightmare.
Basements are unusual in parts of Texas. Gulf coast, the water table is a problem. In central Texas, bedrock is difficult to dig in to. I’ve seen basements in Houston and Austin both though
people next door say people where living there. might have just moved in or where in the process of selling.

I looked at the aerial pics posted here of the suspected site and I don’t see the propane tank suggested. I have a 300 gallon propane tank and it’s pretty clear on Google Maps when I look at my house.
Even my tank going up I can’t imagine it shaking houses 12 miles away. Do serious damage to my house? Yes. Neighbors down the road, no.

CONFIRMED it was from the explosion. I am north-east of there. Around the middle of CR 409. We have large property, all within 2 miles of there. The wind was blowing at 7mph North-east. We smelt it and saw all of the smoke around 6 minutes after. It was UNDOUBTEDLY a gun powder smell. Nothing else. We got on our house right after and saw the explosion area, but no fire.
There’s no way it was a gas explosion, or it would not have smelt like STRONG gun powder.
yes there are basements in TX! I grew up in a house in the dfw area that had a full finished out basement and we had a pool too. Builder was from up north there were about 12 houses in our neighborhood with a basement.

I have a basement about 20 miles from Grandview. It takes special drainage that most contractors don’t want to mess with. We built it ourselves and it doubles as a great tornado shelter. But we can’t do propane because of it.
The reason it is unusual to see a basement in Texas is because it’s VERY expensive to make one here and they usually cause more problems than they are worth. Depending on where you live in the state either the soil is clay which constantly moves getting too soft or too hard and cracking OR it’s too hard. Like giant slabs of limestone have to dynamite to make a basement.
Agree, a gas explosion should not smell like nitrates and gun powder. Theory?
What is a “large property” down there?
Don’t have to worry about permafrost in Texas and foundations don’t have to go that deep in most soils in Texas. It’s less expensive to build up, than dig out and build down. There also tends to be adequate space to build laterally if a larger building is required.
In Texas, a large property is probably over 12 sections, but they have slumlords who rent out on less than an acre.
There are no basements in Texas.
