This guy’s history is something else. He was a registered Democrat (surprise) when he ran for the equivalent of Councilman (Trustee) and served a single term. He decided he wanted to be Mayor in 2008, but there was already a White Mayor (a Democrat-Conservative). The Democrats didn’t want him to run, so he went to the county Republicans and got their endorsement and they called him a “rising star” for the party. He beat the incumbent Mayor (as a Republican) and then switched back to the Democrats (after having used them). He won reelection in 2012 as a Democrat and since then, his antics have gone public.
