France to boost Central African Republic troop presence

France is to send hundreds more troops to the Central African Republic (CAR) as Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warns that the former French colony is "on the verge of genocide". The UN is to debate authorising African and French troops to intervene.

France is planning to significantly increase its contingent in Central African Republic, where it already has 400 soldiers to protect the airport in Bangui and French nationals, while planning troop withdrawal from Mali shortly after the parliamentary elections to be held on Sunday.

Fabius recently said that troop neumbers in CAR would be raised to 1,200.

Guinean President Alpha Condé on Thursday announced his country would send 900 troops to reinforce the UN forces in Mali over the next four months.

Central African Republic is now a failed state. The Muslim rebels (Muslims make up 15% of the population) toppled the corrupt government with help from a lot of foreign fighters from Chad and Sudan. The new "president" disbanded the rebels so they headed out into the countryside and began mass murdering Christian villages. The locals and former government supporters have formed militias to protect themselves and retaliate.

We have/had 100 special forces operators in CAR hunting the Lord's Resistance Army. The Pentagon has been very mum about them since the government fell back in March. France has a lot of interest in the mineral wealth of this country, thus their heavy troop presence. It wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on this one in case we get dragged into it somehow.

Thanks for the article. Hope there is not a bloodbath, I know I’ve seen this place on a map, can’t say much more.

At the time of the collapse of the government our troops were in Obo, in the extreme south east corner.

So far in Mali and CAR the French have used their regular forces instead of the FFL. The 13th actually moved out of Africa to the United Arab Emerites in 2011.

I think that one of the armored-car companies in Mali was FFL.

You could be right. It's not easy keeping track of all the civil wars, coups, fradulent elections and military interventions we've been involved in the last five years.

Or any of the foreign stuff either.

That is interesting. I always thought the Legion handled this type of action while the regular army defended France.

Send in the Foreign Legion! Bring order to this hell hole. At least prevent a bloodbath. The USA will not do it—maybe France can take her place as leaders of Civilization and Peace in a post-American world (brought to you by Obama’s incompetence, cowardice, and inneptude).

That must have dealt a death blow to the waterfront bars in Djibouti when the 13th moved out.

So so sad. America playing second fiddle to France.

We used to make fun of the French for only using their rifles to hold up white flags.

So if they are now a world leader, just what does that make us?

And the low information crowd could care less that the world is falling apart all around us, and that we are falling apart from within.

I must give special thanks to the Democrat party.
