THE TORCH IS PASSED
Lt. John F. Kennedy, USN Skipper, PT-109 1943
Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans - born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage - and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
President John F. Kennedy - 20Jan1961
"Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; For it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be."
(1 Maccabees 3:5860)

Rough week - I’m not used to the long hours and lot’s of stress don’cha know but, things are leveling off. I bailed on the Kindle Mayday button brigade and switched to general retail customer service for Amazon. I’m still short-term seasonal help, not a true Amazonian yet, but I feel the website skillset may allow me to stay on the payroll after the holidays or at least be on the shortlist for callback.

This is not a music video. I simply find it fascinating that differing species can positively interact:

1942 Turkey in the Straw--Carson Robison (1942)
Oh Adolf Hitler grabbed a tail;
He hung right on with tooth and nail.
When he saw what he had then he began to swear.
On the end of that tail was a Russian bear..
The old bear growled and started him to shake.
Adolf knew he'd made a mistake.
He tried to hang on then he tried to let go,
Now they have a new dance called "Hitler in the Snow."
Oh I saw Mussolini sitting on a log,
All puffed up like a great big frog.
I sneaked up close and stuck him with a wire,
He just went "pffft" like an old flat tire.
I took his hide and hung it on a tree.
The tree said, "Hey, don't do that to me!"
So I took it on home to my mother-in-law.
She threw me outside with the turkey in the straw.
Oh a monkey and a baboon sittin' on a rail,
Feeling mighty bad and looking kind of pale.
A little yellow rat comes sneaking 'round the weed.
The monkey said, "Look, there's the guy we need!"
The rat climbed up and they all begin to grin,
Along came a fellow with whiskers on his chin.
He kicked that rail and he broke it with a crack,
And that was the last of the Three-Power Pact.
Oh the frost is on the pumpkin and the potter's in the shop,
And the Yanks are a moving and they pack an awful sock.
The sheep are in the meadow and the cows are in the corn,
There's gonna be a scrap just as sure as you're born.
Soldiers, sailors, pilots, Marines,
Tall ones, short ones, lots of in-betweens,
Powder in their gun and sand in their craw,
Stepping to the tune of "Turkey In The Straw."
Oh swing your partner, here we go
To Berlin, Rome, and Tokyo.
We'll put 'em in a sack and give it a swish,
Throw 'em in the river and kill all the fish.
Tie 'em to a rope and give'em a swing,
Just like a monkey on the end of a swing.
Kick 'em in the pants and sock 'em in the jaw,
Teach 'em how to dance ol' "Turkey In The Straw."
Four hands 'round and everybody shout:
"Skunk in the woodpile, gotta chase him out!"
Adolf Hitler bit off a chaw;
Jam it down his throat with "Turkey In The Straw"!

I have a student who is an aspiring songwriter.
I take him through classic rock songs using a similar (but not as BRILLIANT! LOL) style.
Of course, we also include the lyrics in these analyses, and break them down into personification, alliteration, metaphor, internal rhyme, etc. Last week we analyzed Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were here” and the week before “Hotel California”’ The lyrics in “Wish You Were Here” use contrasting metaphor in much the same way as the Proverbs of Solomon.
I thoroughly enjoyed heard a 9 year old’s insight into the lyrics of “Ripple” by the Grateful Dead!
Most Classic Rock follows a variation of the Sonata format, With first and second subject expositions, a development (Bridge) and finally a Recap of the original theme at the end. Kids are absolutely enchanted when they see how it all comes together.
That is why I appreciate Maestro Schiff so much! :-)
