(AL) Several Decatur, Morgan & Limestone Schools Dismiss Due to Suspicious Package Near Daikin Plant
WHNT News (Local Affiliate) ^ | 21 NOV 2013 | Claire Aiello

Several schools in Decatur, Morgan County and Limestone County are dismissing due to a suspicious situation at the Daikin facility on Highway 20.

Police say a suspicious device was found attached to a rail car at the facility. The rail car contains hazardous material. No other information about the train car involved or the nature of the device was immediately available.

Police say the estimated potential danger zone is 25 miles. Current weather conditions indicate that the greatest danger area would be to the northeast should an explosion occur. The intersection of State Docks Road and Highway 20 West can be used as a reference point.

How many police officers pull over rail road cars for a broken tail light? Easy way to transfer something cross county with minimal chance of being discovered. Probably just a flip comment, but I saw it too. Interesting.

I guess for maybe pot but any real high dollar drugs seems rather risking at losing your product. And it probably wasn’t really a Daikin employee that made the comment but thought it was interesting. It’s been awhile since I worked at Union Pacific but they did back then pretty much have their own mini-police force for the “yards” back then.

Dry Run?

I was thinking about this while talking with my wife about it. If I were gonna do an attack, I'd use a two-or-three pronged approach.

1. The fire at Nichols aluminum would not be a bad way to get an attack day started. Not necessary, but probably useful to a terrorist.
2. Getting something 'suspicious' into that industrial area would be a really good ramp-up... whether it was actually dangerous or not, but in a real action, it would be some sort of actual explosive that would be triggered... Something sizable enough to engage a large response.
3. Finally, with those things acting as diversions, the Browns Ferry plant would be the actual target.

All of that said: while such an attack would be unprecedented (and all that goes with it), I actually doubt it would have the impact that a terrorist would want. If you're going to do something that big, it's got to have a large killing impact, frankly. I don't think this area would necessarily provide that kind of result.

Economic damage? Absolutely. But arguably, the news media would forget about North Alabama within a week of any such event.

That's a cold look at it, but I suppose days like this require a dispassionate view of things.

Kudos to the first responders: everybody got to dust off and exercise their disaster plans. Nobody knew whether this was ‘real’ or not, but they did their jobs: schools and everything.
