Southbound Interstate 35 in Duluth was closed Monday, and will remain closed for at least a week or more after bridge inspectors found a deteriorated piling on the roadway.

The damaged piling is on one of 38 supports, or piers, for the low bridge that runs from Mesaba Avenue west to near 21st Avenue West.

The piling that supports the pier “was so corroded we could see through it,” Duane Hill, chief district engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, told the News Tribune.

The entire stretch of freeway in Duluth was completely rebuilt over a period of 3 years at the cost of 10s and 10s of millions of dollars. This was the first completely construction free year after the project is complete.

Now they tell us the road is unsafe.

It is so discouraging. It seems our government is incapable of doing ANYTHING right.

And they just now discovered a problem? What kind of inspection schedule were they following?

This is what I’m saying. They put a completely new concrete deck on that foundation. Two years ago.

I guess they were planning to inspect it during the investigation of it's collapse...

Sure 'nuf did.

Even though the collapsed bridge was built in 1967, Pawlenty was governor at the time...so, of course, it was all his fault.

Only stands to reason, then, that the blame for this one will fall on the current (goofy) Dim governor.

Right?

Relax, Dianna didn’t mean that. Besides, if Pawlenty has to take the blame for a bridge collapse then he gets credit for rebuilding it in record time.

actually no.
We drove our R.V. towing a Subaru outback.
From Duluth we took route 2 across to Montana and Yellowstone then back.
Pretty awesome seeing sunflowers as far as the eye can see.

every morning I hear about a ramp somewhere in the metro closed due to control arms malfunctioning.

this will last for days. how hard is it to remove the arm or just keep it bolted in the upright position?

is MNDOT hiring all idiots now?

We’ll be told it’s Cheney’s fault and Halliburton road salt.
