"Please donate food items so associates in need can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner," reads a sign accompanied by several plastic bins.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer first reported on the food drive, which has sparked outrage in the area.
"That Wal-Mart would have the audacity to ask low-wage workers to donate food to other low-wage workers — to me, it is a moral outrage," Norma Mills, a customer at the store, told the Plain Dealer.

I am working on Thanksgiving and the rest of the weekend. Sometimes it is required.
and you can keep one in the freezer for Christmas too. lol
our center peice is the ham we all love ham
Well I sure hope you will not be using an utilities, or driving any where, or watching any television that day, or heaven forbid someone in your household has a medical emergency because all of the executive scum of those companies are forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving.
FIRST...You need to drop the idea that Walmart or any employer is the one responsible for the employee.
Walmart employs 2 million people. They are the largest employer outside of government.
They don't hire people TO SUPPLY them with jobs. The hire them because they have a need to fill, but because of the nature of the business, NOT EVERY job NEEDS to be full time. So Walmart hires to THEIR NEEDS not the employees. Its not Walmarts (or any other employers) job to give full time jobs to anyone who is looking for them.
Some employees work part time because of school schedules (theirs or their kids) some because they really don't need or want a full time job. Others work part time because that's all they can find.
Once again, its not Walmarts "responsibility" to hire people. They hire people because THEY have jobs that need to be filled. They pay X amount for that job. If an employee wants to work for X, then great. If not, then work somewhere else. If a person can't find a job anywhere else, it doesn't suddenly become Walmarts responsibility to pay them more than normal or give them more hours than Walmart needs.
So what Walmart is doing is offering a way that its employees and customers can help out some of its employees who are having a tough time.
Here's a little education.
Walmart has 2 MILLION employees.
They have a profit of $16 BILLION.
They had a profit margin of between 3-3.5%
The Walton family owns 48% of Walmart stock.
Walmart offers stock to employees and will match 15% on up to $1800 w/ no brokerage fees.
Do a little math. Take 2 Million people. Half work full time, half work part time. Take the 1 million part time workers and add what you think insurance would cost for each of them. (What $150, $200, $250 a month???) $200 a month x 12 months= $2,400 a year x 1 million employees= $2.4 Billion.
Next, figure hourly pay. How much more should Walmart pay its people??? A simple $2 an hour raise, across the board, would cost about $6 Billion.
Now remember, many of these employees who are hurting financially are part time, so though a $2 an hour raise helps a little, the issue isn't just hourly pay, its overall pay. These people need more hours.
When you're looking at the $16 Billion profit Walmart has, remember that 48% is owned by the Walton family. The rest is owned primarily by individual investers, MANY current or former Walmart employees.
The only way to pay employees more is to cut into profits. Much of those profits go to current and former employees who purchased stock.
Current Walmart stock sells for $79 a share with profits at between 3%-3.5%.
Why would employees buy stock if there was no return on investment? Why would investers buy stock if there was no return? Why would investers hold on to stock if there was no return on investment?
Life is hard. And the bottom line for any business is the bottom line. And the bottom line is, that any business that doesn't show a profit, shows a loss. And businesses that lose money don't stay in business long. Not because they're greedy, but because the people they owe money to are.
Ham for Christmas.
Lee Scott made $27 Million his last year with Walmart.
There are 2 million Walmart employees, working a total of about 3 BILLION man hours. That comes out to about 9/10 of a cent per hour if Lee's pay were divided equally among everybody.
It wouldn't raise up any of the workers to see that "raise". All it would do is knock one person down.
I am.
I get to work all day and night to deal with blown transformers and power systems for a major client.
Do I want to work on Thanksgiving? not necessarily, Do I need to work on Thanksgiving? Most definitely.
It’s what folks do to keep the wheel turning.
Sure.
Been there, done that. Can totally relate.

I know I was, as were my parents and my grandparents, even when my dad or grandad had to work that day or Christmas day.
And that was exactly the point I was trying to make to the person to whom I originally replied.
So many have their panties in a wad because some retailers are "forcing" their employees to work, yet they forget about all the folks "forced" to work so they can have their Thanksgiving the way they want theirs to be.
People are clueless on what WORK is. Tell me I’m stocking a shelf and busting down boxes I would change work.
Tell me that high voltage xfmrs must go along with back-up systems in 12 hours, I can get into that.
Low-information lazy BS is all this is.
um sorry, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. It has nothing to do w/ union scale. There are retailers who are not union and pay their employees a really good wage, with great benefits and treat employees in a fair manner. COSTCO, Trader Joe’s and WINCO...to name some local area retailers.
Walmart’s business model is to attract lower income customers...no one said that was a bad thing. What is not such a great thing is that they pay so poorly that their employees rely on state assistance. THAT’s the bad thing. Why are tax payers bailing out a retailer who has the ability and profitability to pay a decent wage? I do not wish my tax dollars to pay $$ because a large private company hasn’t figured out how to provide benefits to their employees.
Again you're wrong and in way over your head. You don't know enough about Free market conservatism to carry your trolling any further. It is NOT Walmart's duty or responsibility to ensure that it's employees sustain themselves. It is there responsibility to pay for work received...and if that part time single mother with five baby daddies can't afford to buy a flat screen TV working part time as a cashier I don't see that as wal Mart's fault.
What's your solution? A mandatory "Living Wage"? If you think that tax dollars that are redistributed to the poor are a subsidy to Walmart you really are at the wrong site.
Do a little research before you spew. Tell me what Walmart's profit is. Tell me the profit return percentage. Tell me, using those numbers how much Walmart could add to their employees pay or benefits?
My buddy's wife has been at Walmart for over 20 years. For over 10 years she has been making just over $20 an hour.
You're the one with that problem.
What do you consider "a really good wage,..?"
COSTCO, Trader Joes and WINCO...to name some local area retailers.
That's YOUR local area, which is not everyone else's. Where I live the poultry processing plants always had the best wages and benefits for low/unskilled work.........UNTIL WalMart came into the area. Now they get the people that can't get a job at WalMart.
What is not such a great thing is that they pay so poorly that their employees rely on state assistance.
Before you start busting on the private sector, I suggest you check into how many people who work for the government, including many in the military, also rely on state assistance.
I do not wish my tax dollars to pay $$ because a large private company hasnt figured out how to provide benefits to their employees.
Hate to burst your nonsensical bubble - but it is NOT the responsibility of any business to provide anything to anyone other than what an employee agrees to or a customer agrees to pay.
Seriously dude....I have done the research...this IS my business. The Walton’s make billions of dollars. I don’t begrudge their ability to make money. I do begrudge them making profit at the expense of state and local tax payers.
If your buddy’s wife has been making $20/hr for 20 years...does that mean she’s never been given a raise? Rhetorical question..don’t bother answering.
I’m stupified that conservative folks don’t understand that tax payers are the one’s ponying up $$$ to pay for foodstamps and medical benefits because businesses choose to pay their people low wages/schedule few weekly hours just so they are not obligated to pay benefits.
Now you might be fine w/ that business model...I’m not. I’ve seen what Walmart has done to small town after small town...come into a town, get special tax breaks, because they supposedly will generate more jobs.
And what really happens is that local businesses die away. These were the same folks who paid a decent wage and treated their employees well...and treated their customers well.
So yeah...capitalism. I wouldn’t want to live under any other system. But give me a break when you want to throw accusations at someone. I know this business and I know this company very, very well. And not because I have a buddy who works there.
