On Monday, former Congressman and staunch libertarian Ron Paul (R-TX) campaigned for Virginia Republican Governor candidate Ken Cuccinelli and said Virginias would be giving up on liberty if they voted for Democrat Terry McAuliffe in Tuesday’s election and would be “insane” if they voted for so-called libertarian Robert Sarvis, the third-party candidate who may siphon enough votes from Cuccinelli to spoil the election.

I don’t blame the libertarians when our guys loose, I blame elected Republicans who don’t work to prevent vote fraud. When we loose a close election it is always within the margin of fraud.

Except when they attempt to drive out a true conservative in an election by fronting a third party candidate. There in lies the problem. Libertarians are savagely used by the left to defeat conservatives.

Well, you blew the dog whistle. Just a matter of time before usual suspects show up with the cut and paste anti libertarian bullet points.

As conservatives, we need to leave the welcome mat out for our libertarian allies and earn their votes by addressing their concerns. But we should stop deluding ourselves by thinking they are responsible when we lose elections. They are not. We are, and acceptance is the first step to recovery.

Absolutely spot on.

My perfect world scenario is an America where we have two political parties, Libertarian and Conservative.

The “Leftist” Conservatives would hold the line on public roadways and retaining some method of funding most basic Constitutional government institutions.

very good post. I come from a family who saw their conservatism as connected primarily with social issues. In some ways “one note Charlies” with abortion as their primary political concern. Then add in all the rest —gay marriage, drugs, law & order, porn. They saw the threat as coming primarily from atheistic communists and now Muslim jihadist and had no idea of the corruption of our military industrial complex and how the banks have made us all slaves. I can pick and choose my battles. Sometimes I will be on the same page as conservatives and other times I won’t.

Still, conservatives share common ground with many libertarians on issues like gun rights, taxes, regulation, overzealous prosecutions, government spying on the citizenry and petty fascism by government officials.

These items are what most libertarians care most about. The drug legalization falls under overzealous prosecutions mentioned above, not getting stoned. Anybody can do that now.

Good article.

>>Libertarians are not conservatives,<<

Many Libertarians are conservative. Smaller government, Less regulation, more self determination. Belief in the individual sovereign.

Those ARE conservative values. I do not subscribe to all of the views of Libertarianism, but I'd sure support a Libertarian over the likes of McCain, Graham, Romney, Boehner and McConnell.

Surely support a Libertarian over a liberal democrat.

The big difference between libertarians and conservatives is temporal perspective. Conservatives are more focused upon the future, ensuring that families raise healthy and productive children. Libertarians are more focused upon "what I want."

Point that out to them and offer supporting data and some of them actually start to think.
