French president receives hero’s welcome for taking tough stance on Tehran’s nuclear program; Netanyahu: Paris is a ‘true friend’
France will uphold economic sanctions on Iran as long as the Islamic Republic does not prove it has taken serious steps toward curbing its nuclear program, French President Francois Hollande said Sunday at the opening of a state visit to Israel.
“France will not make concessions on nuclear proliferation,” Hollande pledged during a ceremony at Ben Gurion International Airport, upon his arrival. “France will maintain all its measures and sanctions until we are certain that Iran has renounced nuclear weapons.”
The French president arrived Sunday for a high-profile visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories in the midst of ongoing deliberations over Iran’s nuclear program.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Hollande, and praised the French president’s dedication to the Jewish state. ”Israel sees in France a true friend,” he said at the ceremony. The prime minister went on to warn of the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran, saying it “wouldn’t just endanger Israel and the countries in the Middle East but it would also endanger France, Europe and the entire world.”
“You, Mr. President, display an aggressive stance against Syria and also against Iran’s unceasing efforts to arm itself with a nuclear weapon,” Netanyahu continued, addressing Hollande in an allusion to reports that France had scuttled a deal with Iran in nuclear talks earlier this month in Geneva.
Later Sunday, Hollande was set to meet with Netanyahu to discuss a new round of nuclear talks with Iran slated for Wednesday in Geneva. He is also expected to deliver a speech in the Knesset later this week.
France apparently blocked what its foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, called “a sucker’s deal,”

Maybe His Excellency should pay them a social visit. That should make them vote against his ideas even more!
I guess just like the French Fleet off of Yorktown, they have their Fleet now sybolically off of Haifa.
The French marched on Paris in the hundreds of thousands against gay marriage.
They give the liberal Hollande a 15% approval rating, don’t know what they think of this particular vote, I imagine he feels a lot of opposition.
They have no respect for Obama, I imagine, don’t know.
Americans tend to hate the French. It always seems to be a result of bigotry or ignorance. I don’t know, what is it?
We can never figure it out.
When we go to France, we go to places we want to see war memorials, shrines, museums, and we stay in good hotels, and eat locally (not mcdonalds like our friends do), we shop at the department stores and, our favorite, Monoprix, and we speak French.
We went to Normandy with a group, our friends drove us in their van. He was looking for, and complaining that there was no McDonalds.
sigh.
We went to a restaurant ON Utah Beach and had the best fish and white wine one could ask for in a pull over and eat something lunch.
Our proprietor there and at the B&B were wonderful and very nice to us.
Normandy is preserved. you could be there 70 years ago, you can imagine it.
On to Carentan, where the Airborne dropped in on DDay.
The churches had their stained glass windows blown out in the bombing, and had been replaced by local artisans with images of paratroopers.
I just don’t get why Americans hate the French.
My buddy was on a wine buying expedition for his company on May 15th near the Rhine. He said it was like a national US holiday there. It may be almost 60 years since VE day but those from those areas love the US. Perhaps those in Paris feel otherwise but their distain for non French speaking peoples is universal.
I think to some extent the French like to take an opposition stance to the US.
I can still remember how a decade ago the French stabbed Bush in the back over Iraq. But it’s easy when the US plays a leading role in defending Western values for the Europeans to call us cowboys and preen arrogantly about peace in our time.
When the US abdicates that leadership role and elects a radical Islamist to the White House not once but twice, the Europeans are finally forced to stand up for their own interests. There was a big leadership void, and if it wasn’t the French it could’ve just as easily been the British or Germans.
The French are individual thinkers and they’ll take an opposing side when their interests are in mind. I guess I admire that.
The Germans HATED Bush. the Germans on the street, that is. I would ask them, ‘what do you care? he’s not your president?’.
There’s just such a different standard for the French.
Hollande is a rot gut socialist hack of a failure but give him credit on this one-—even if he is appeasing right wing sentinments.

Why people refuse to speak a little bit of another language is most embarrassing.
I was in a shop and two American women were so snobby and rude, condescending it was mortifying.
I said, ‘the word you might want to use is ‘Merci’. The shopkeeper smiled at me.
I was outraged at the disdain Americans think they can get away with.
And yet, here, I am treated in the same way, in my own country for not speaking Spanish. I am a war veteran, no one could care any less that I don’t agree with giving our language away.
I see clearly that is the French had given way to English it would be their language , the way we Americans are giving away ours.
The WWII Vets would be disgusted with us.
If you go to the French countryside and of the regular path in Paris, and say Merci and s’il vous plait, and ask them to just decide for you what lunch to eat and smile, you would see a difference.
The Germans are nice to Americans, and when they have to endure our terrible driving, butchering of their language and snobbiness, they talk about us behind our backs. The French just like to be snobby back to us on the spot.
I have never been to the Eiffel Tower and I avoid Notre Dame, and the Louvre.
There ARE other places to go where the locals are not burnt out on pushy Americans and where they are very happy to see us being slightly curious about what makes France interesting.
In hindsight, it was better to keep a secular evil dictator like Saddam in charge rather than a govt that cuddles up to Iran and which has thousands of people killed a year in a low-key civil war

Good point. Perhaps if we recognize the France that used to be, they could rise again to that level.
If Americans ever want their president to receive a hero’s welcome again in Israel they’ll have to vote Republican.
When Bibi Netanyahu hit the ceiling over Obama’s decision to embrace Iran, whose motto is ‘’Israel must be wiped off the map,’’ he seems to have dislodged some of the foggy delusions in his brain, including the one that says Barack Obama is a genuine ally of Israel, when in fact Obama is a leading member of the Louis Farrakhan wing of the Democratic party.
When the socialist president of France is a better friend to Israel and tougher on the terrorist nation Iran with nukes than the president of the US, it’s a sad day indeed — for the US and Israel.
