A South Carolina charter school has canceled its annual Christmas toy drive after a group of self-described humanists complained that the project violated the U.S. Constitution and accused them of bribing children to convert to Christianity.
Renee Mathews, the principal of East Point Academy in West Columbia, S.C., said the annual Operation Christmas Child project was halted because the American Humanist Association threatened to sue the school.
We received a letter saying we had to cease and desist immediately or they would take legal action against us, Mathews told me.
The small charter school had been participating in Operation Christmas Child for the past two years without any controversy.
"This letter serves as notice to policymaking school officials of the East Point Academys unconstitutional conduct and as a demand that the school terminate all promotion, sponsorship, endorsement or affiliation with Operation Christmas Child immediately, read the letter from the American Humanist Association.
Mathews said their small school had no choice.

We cannot allow private charity. It might undermine the idea that all life depends on the government.
What part of "Congress shall make no law" applies to the constitutionality of the actions of this school?
I’m excited. Our grandson did Operation Christmas Child at his school but we are going to do this as a family.
Need to go tomorrow and gather my items. Any suggestions. Did you use the plastic shoeboxes from .99 Store?
I messaged Jay Sekolow and told him about this story.
communism masquerading as humanism.
We had shoe boxes we’ve saved. Nice one’s where the top just flips back. Bought all the stuff at WalMart. They had solar calculators for one dollar, pack of 20 pencils for a buck and a quarter. All the stuff was quite reasonable so we really loaded up. We filled the boxes as we shopped. Great family time.
If not, the other options are:
1) Thomas More Law Center
2) Alliance Defending Freedom
3) Liberty Counsel
All of these fine groups are the antidote to the ACLU and others of their ilk. We can win this war but must stay vigilant.
Sounds like Constitutional-grade harassment to me. Maybe TMLC will give the inhumanists something to think about.
Bump.
“self-described humanists” - GFY!
We got three boxes loaded up and ready to go. Got something else loaded up and ready to go if these bastards come knocking around my door. Merry Christmas.
Super idea... daughter and I will make our trip to Wal-Mart tomorrow. From now on I will save flip top shoe boxes throughout the year. Going to see if I can get the extended family to help us too...
Yes, take the project to a non-government venue.
the idiots have no say (yet) about what private people do on their own time.
Ironic that on their website their motto is “You Are Free To Choose”.
When are Christians going to fight back?
Where ARE the Christian soldiers?
It's thinking like that is why the conservative movement and conservatives continue to get our asses kicked.
These people couldn't care less about the Constitution or freedom of religion or anything else. They simply want to create chaos and destroy us. They play us for fools when we try to debate and use logic with them.
We spend so much time and energy using facts and logic, and they simply smirk, call us racists and hand out free cell phones.
And they're winning. Big Time.
I say it’s time to think boldly outside of the box for God and for God’s sake.
The bible says to the crooked, God shows Himself [depending on your translation the rendering is:] crooked, or astute.
Here’s the key for getting God and the bible back in the schools. In my own Holy Spirit gripped redneck mind, of course (YMMV). Teach that God is cool. Kids will be toting crosses and bibles like they carried around the hippie symbols of the 60s. They will be wishing each other Merry Christmas. And those fuddy duddies will not be able to do a thing about it.
And how do we teach the kids this?
MASS MEDIA!!!
How many GOSPEL GAMES are there on the Xbox or whatever? I haven’t seen one. Oh my, the quest of the cross and defeating Satan and the ministry of angels and going to heaven (or hell)... where are people’s imaginations? Offer them up to God. We are so cowed by what we call traditional church format that we think anything outside the format is blasphemous. No if it gives glory to God it is not blasphemous!!
Complete misreading of the 1st Amendment aside, it astounds me that so many of these feckless, cowardly school administrators do not understand that these bullying letters are worthless since the atheist organizations that send them out have no standing to sue within their communities. It's all just a bluff, and when they do actually sue, they lose and lose badly.
Bump
