...Typhoon Haiyan Not ‘Worst Storm Ever’; Bangladesh Cyclone Killed Half Million People In 1970

As terrible as the Haiyan typhoon has been for the Philippines, it is nowhere close to being the “worst storm ever,” as some media outlets have alleged. Current stories on Haiyan are describing it as the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in recorded history based on its extraordinary wind strength of 195 mph. However, in terms of loss of life, a cyclone that occurred 2,000 miles west of the Philippines some 40 years ago was far worse.

In November 1970, the Bhola Cyclone smashed into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Bengal (India) and killed at least 500,000 people -- although the true death toll will never be known. That is at least 50 times the number of deaths recorded in the Philippines over the weekend.

“Worst” wind speed, or “Worst” lost of life? You have to take into account the integrity of housing structures 40 years ago compared to today, versus wind speed.

I posted this earlier. Certainly Hurricaine Camille which hit the U.S. Gulf states in 1969 was just as powerful. There were two hurricaines that were more powerful, one that hit the USA, in 1935 (the Labor Day Hurricaine) and Hurricaine Andrew in 1992.

Kind of sick that they are making a competition out of this. People dud and people are suffering. Who cares which one is worse?

Are you describing "just as powerful" based upon wind speed?

Were the wind speeds measured or estimated?

Do they have hurricane hunters over there?

For anyone wondering WHY we question the strength of this storm, it is because the LEFT is using it as ammunition to point to the effects of “Global Warming”.. All such evidence should be called into question.

Every natural disaster now is “worst ever.” It’s Glowbull Warming propaganda.

The Bangladesh deaths were for the exact same reason Katrina was so devestating.

High water. People lived in flood plains and being ignorant clods, didn’t leave. The same is true of Staten Island. The destroyed house should not have been and the people living in them were more or less fools.

You just don’t live where there will be floods

*Every natural disaster now is “worst ever.” It’s Glowbull Warming propaganda.*

There was a local paper that had an article that was almost entirely lies.
It said that every year in the last 15 years has been hotter than the year before and are the hottest year ever!

Algore tried that one back in the 90’s and was defeated by facts.

Communists rely on the ignorance of the average low information voter to promote their Socialist/Communist global warming scam.

Odd that people will rush to enslave everyone, including themselves...

Good point.

Their “worst hurricane season” didn’t turn out. They’re glad this one turned up, even if across the globe.

Hurricane Camille, while a relatively small storm in terms of size radius..is still the most powerful storm to ever strike the mainland of the United States. Sustained winds that were actually recorded were 190 M.P.H. ...pressure was 909 millibars at landfall, which is still a record for that far north in the Atlantic Basin. So far, the winds in this Typhoon are only estimated at 195 sustained. Also, in Camille, a sea going vessel recorded a gust of 237 M.P.H just south of the tip of Louisiana. When Hurricanes reach this intensity, they rarely stay that way for long..Camille simply never weakened..extremely rare storm. Though the satellite photos of Camille are not very good quality, its still the most tightly knotted storm i’ve ever seen. That thing was wound up..

Floods - hurricanes - don’t happen much up there by NY.

They occur more in the Gulf and your comment about the sloth of people and politicos in Katrina is certainly valid.

When people were going on about how 1989’s Hurricane Hugo and the SF earthquake* were a harbinger of the end of times, I pointed out that if death tolls were the criteria, then we were all dead in 1970. 1970 not only had this cyclone but one of the biggest** earthquakes in history where 70,000 died in Peru. I told them that until the death toll rose above these 1970 numbers then you shouldn’t even consider complaining about how the sky is falling.

* Both disasters combined had a death toll of just over 100.

** The tenth worst ever on some lists.

Very true. The enviro-wacko movement has probably tapped into that psychological truism better than any other leftist scam.

Getting the truth out is good, though, because I read a few days ago that it was the Global Warming crowd who were blowing hyperbole about this storm, exaggerating winds by +50 mp, ‘worst storm ever in the whole world,’ saying it was a 5 when it was a 4.

Don’t get me wrong - it was a terrible storm, and those crummy houses just don’t stand a chance. My heart goes out to the people and I celebrate that they are getting a lot of help from around the world.

Still, it turns my stomach to see the GW crowd use this tragedy for their agenda. For that reason I am relieved to see the truth coming out. I suspect that is why it was posted and why the facts were put out as news, too.
