When Mitch McConnell receives the National Rifle Association's "Defender of Freedom" Award in Louisville on Friday, he and the group will be cementing a friendship that McConnell's team thinks could be the difference in next year's Senate race.
The NRA, which spent more than $16 million in the 2012 election cycle, plans to be heavily involved in McConnell's re-election effort, the group said Thursday.
"We're watching closely," Chris Cox, the NRA's top lobbyist, told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "And we're going to make sure that gun owners in Kentucky understand that they have a champion representing them in the United States Senate."
Alison Lundergan Grimes, the likely Democratic challenger to McConnell, had a simple response Thursday, challenging McConnell to meet her on the gun range.
"As an NRA member, my strong support for the Second Amendment is unquestioned," Grimes said in a statement to the Herald-Leader. "I am proud of Kentucky's long-held gun ownership, sporting and hunting traditions. It is unfortunate that Senator McConnell is desperate to mislead Kentucky voters about my strong support for the Second Amendment."
If elected, Grimes said, she would protect Kentuckians' right to keep and bear arms.
"Whenever he's not busy pandering to Washington lobbyists, I welcome Senator McConnell to come shoot with me at the range any day," she said.

“Just dont give to the NRA PAC. I stopped a while back when they supported McCain.”
Not only did they support McCain, but also:
-Harry Reid
-Joe Manchin
-Heath Schuler
-Pat Toomey
Honorable mention to the likes of Kirsten Gillibrand and Bob Casey. The NRA is very much an “establishment” organization who will work with and for “establishment” politicians.
The get zero $ from me.
This is why I will not join these A-holes.
NRA in tank for Mitch?
well, so much for keeping the powder dry..
McConnell, the new Kentucky Windage.
I haven’t given the NSA a penny since they backed that lowlife Reid.
I am done with the frauds
And this defect in the NRA’s strategy is why I let my NRA membership expire and no longer contribute to their political fund raising.
“For conservative gun owners...
Well aware of G.O.A. but I’m withholding judgement (as well as money and any membership) for the time being. If you think they are doing well and standing ground and you feel like paying up for a card, then, by all means do so.
They were not a one issue organization in the 2010 elections when they supported Democrats over Republicans who had better 2A voting records.
Their behavior during the 2010 elections is why I didn’t renew my membership.
Thanks! I just signed up with them.
Bastards. Every time they do something good (blocked UBC’s and jump in after the fact in the Colo recalls) and you begin to think they’re not in league with the statists, then they go crap on it and do something like this.
I will not renew my membership, and I hope the NRA loses all the money they invest in this weasel’s campaign.
Is "champion" some other language for "wussy pussy Quisling RINO collaborator with statist tyrants"? If not, I think there's a typo in this press release.
Yeap! They had a big spread in their April 2012 magazine with plenty of pictures of Dingy and Chris Cox and Wayne LaPierre. They didn’t endorse him, but they didn’t have to after the the article.
Doesn't work, though. although they're morons in pretty much every other way, Congressional "leaders" aren't political morons. When they have some new piece of tyranny up for vote, they know how many votes they need and who's up for reelection, particularly in close districts, and will let vulnerable members cast useless pro-freedom votes to bolster their records. Something has to be done to correct for that. You could count only pro-liberty votes when the pro-liberty forces won, but then you might end up punishing someone who voted the right way for the right reasons in a losing battle. Not sure what to do, but I know that you can't totally go by voting records.
Mine has just cane up for renewal but I guess I'll not be renewing this year after all as I don't see my dues being spent very wisely with this endorsement.
Boy it is really getting ugly out there.
