When Mitch McConnell receives the National Rifle Association's "Defender of Freedom" Award in Louisville on Friday, he and the group will be cementing a friendship that McConnell's team thinks could be the difference in next year's Senate race.
The NRA, which spent more than $16 million in the 2012 election cycle, plans to be heavily involved in McConnell's re-election effort, the group said Thursday.
"We're watching closely," Chris Cox, the NRA's top lobbyist, told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "And we're going to make sure that gun owners in Kentucky understand that they have a champion representing them in the United States Senate."
Alison Lundergan Grimes, the likely Democratic challenger to McConnell, had a simple response Thursday, challenging McConnell to meet her on the gun range.
"As an NRA member, my strong support for the Second Amendment is unquestioned," Grimes said in a statement to the Herald-Leader. "I am proud of Kentucky's long-held gun ownership, sporting and hunting traditions. It is unfortunate that Senator McConnell is desperate to mislead Kentucky voters about my strong support for the Second Amendment."
If elected, Grimes said, she would protect Kentuckians' right to keep and bear arms.
"Whenever he's not busy pandering to Washington lobbyists, I welcome Senator McConnell to come shoot with me at the range any day," she said.

I guess I can let that NRA membership expire too.
This is satire, right?
Grover Al Norquist sits on the board of the NRA.
Reason #23 that I am no longer an NRA member.
Really?
Wow. That'll be a blow to their membership numbers. I predict a lot of cancellations.
NRA = STUPID??????????????????????? He’s got to go!
McConnell is a rat. Grimes is like a rat with scabies.
GO BEVIN!
The NRA is a one issue organization.
They only care about the individual’s voting record.
All incumbents, D or R, with a solid voting record gets their nod over challengers.
They are not a Tea Party PAC.
In the age of oboma and the rise of Marxism, now is not a good time for the NRA to turn it’s back on the people trying to protect their Constitutional freedoms.
“I guess I can let that NRA membership expire too...”
The NRA is not a “conservative” organization. They are a “status quo” organization. Very political. They still endorse plenty of Dems even though those Dems can, do, and, will cave and vote for gun control legislation. GOP too. They want to be bipartisan in any way that they can.
I was a member for years and, if they change their ways, I might once again be a member. But, at present, not a member and don’t care to be. There is still a “Hunting and Skeet Shooting”-only element within the NRA to this day.
Tell me I imagined the article I just read about McConnell.
Just don’t give to the NRA PAC. I stopped a while back when they supported McCain.
I have already dumped McConnel from my list of favorites and it appears that I’ll have to dump my NRA membership to stay true to what I believe is best overall for the USA. That the NRA can be bought by a nefarious politician like McConnell when others are out there is a serious letdown. If I read anything about the NRA vouching for McConnell I will let my world know the NRA is not a USA supporter in that it only supports a gun agenda and questionable patriots.
Didn’t it “play big” for Reid too?
And when all our other Constitutional rights are gone, they won't understand why theirs got canceled as well.
They think only their issue will survive the "fundamental change?"
They need to see the bigger picture. They're playing small ball. Their opposition is playing for keeps.
this should be a popcorn-worthy thread!
As far as I’m concerned, any org not openly pursuing repeal of all gun legislation not enumerated in the 2nd amendment is not a pro second amendment org.
Time to rethink my NRA membership, it appears.
