Pandemonium broke out in the heart of Manhattan on Saturday when two men were shot on the ice at the popular Bryant Park skating rink just after 11 p.m., the police said.
One man was shot in the torso and one in the leg. Both were recovering at Bellevue Hospital Center.
A skater, Francis, 17, who gave only his first name, said he was behind one of the victims when the shots were fired. He said the shooter was standing among tourists who were taking pictures outside of the rink. Then he pulled a gun.
He took out a gun and was scanning for him with his eyes, and then he shot him three times and ran, he said. People around me fell to the ice. I fell down, too. Then I got up and ran to the railing like everyone else.
Many of the more than 50 skaters dropped to the ice, and others fled screaming, tearing through the holiday shops in Bryant Park carrying their rented skates with only socks covering their feet. Many tried to escape through the skate rental tent, but were delayed when they were asked to present claim tickets to recover their bags.

I can't imagine why the Times would have left that out...
It’s DeBlasio time!

Before rising from his seat and opening fire, the gunman was heard to say to the passing Conteras, Give me your jacket, a law-enforcement source said.

So, I’m reading through this thread, and all the comments, and I’m just wondering — does anyone know if the shooter was black?

“All the news that’s fit to print” my a** !
Don’t they realize that if the description is NOT published they are telling us exactly what they don’t want us to know.
.
How can this happen in a city that is a gun free zone?
Black shooter in posh neighborhood. Hmm, wonder what THAT could be about.
The NY Post isn't much better, but did give a clue:
"The gunman, described as in his 20s, and wearing dreadlocks and a green and black North Face jacket, immediately fled the scene with his pals, and was being sought."
Fox 5 News in NYC refused to give a description in their report.

Does anyone else get the impression, that these gang types are coming up out of the ghetto, and perpetrating these crimes in nice neighborhoods now?
It’s just anecdotal evidence, but in the past few years, we’ve heard many more stories such as this, in which some feral gang bang type shoots someone in what is considered to be a nice area of a major city. And the flash mob robberies are happening in good neighborhoods too. I get the impression that the feral gang criminal element is not feeling constrained by the boundaries of the ghetto.
This used to happen all the time during Dinkins’s reign in NYC. The ghetto rats used to alway talk about coming to Manhattan to “get paid”.
