Tacloban — The death toll from a super typhoon that decimated entire towns in the Philippines could soar well over 10,000, authorities warned Sunday, making it the country's worst recorded natural disaster.

The horrifying estimates came as rescue workers appeared overwhelmed in their efforts to help countless survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds rampaging across a huge chunk of the archipelago on Friday.

Police said they had deployed special forces to contain looters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital of Leyte, while the United States announced it had responded to a Philippine government appeal and would send military help.

"Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, told AFP, as he warned of the increasing desperation of survivors.

There is no clean water, no electricity and very little food. City officials said they were struggling to distribute aid and that looting was widespread.

I have not seen tonight’s news, but this afternoon they showed one, of more to come, C5 transports landing at Tacloban with emergency supplies. No doubt, supplies will start pouring in from all over the world.

Among the dead is former Australian priest Kevin Lee, who had been a whistleblower about child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.
It is believed the 50-year-old had been living in the Philippines with his Filipino wife and they had just had their first child. Last year Mr Lee was removed from his parish responsibilities in western Sydney after admitting to marrying in secret.

Ormoc City has no power or water still. There are dead and missing that they can't reach yet. I am getting sporadic texts from my friends there, as they restored the cell service on generators. But, most of them can't recharge their phones...

Ormoc and Tacolaban, so near, but so far.
The devastation is too enormous for us to imagine.
I do not understand how we were so spared.

A comment from a libtard website

Planet earth wants its coastal areas back and she is taking them one at a time. We need to heed her message and move inland. The planet is also trying to cleans herself of all our toxic waste. What we have done to the oceans and everything else on the planet is shameful. We will learn to respect nature one way or another.

10,000 dead and the poster thinks they deserved it ...
