MINNEAPOLIS Voters in Minneapolis have sent a Somali-American to their city council for the first time, a sign of the immigrant community's growing strength in the city. Abdi Warsame took 64 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election, well ahead of incumbent Robert Lilligren. Both the Star Tribune and Minnesota Public Radio reported that Warsame will become the highest-ranking elected Somali-American in the U.S. when he takes office. Warsame, 35, left Somalia as a child and spent much of his life in England. He moved to Minneapolis in 2006 and heads a tenant association in a Minneapolis high-rise that is home to some 4,000 East Africans, Minnesota Public Radio reported (http://bit.ly/1eiKbxv ). The Minneapolis-St. Paul area is home to the highest concentration of Somali immigrants in the United States. "I'm an American who happens to be Somali. ... This is my base and I'm proud of that," Warsame said during a celebration to watch election returns. "But I'm here to represent everyone in my ward. If I don't, I will have failed." Warsame left Somalia as a child and spent much of his life in England. He moved to Minneapolis in 2006 and heads the tenant association for the Riverside Plaza, the high-rises that house 4,000 East Africans. He got involved in politics in 2011, working on the unsuccessful state Senate campaign of Mohamud Noor. Warsame said he wants to address the concerns facing his community, including jobs, roads, housing and young people who need mentors. He built a ground operation of hundreds of East African volunteers. They mobilized about 1,500 supporters to cast early ballots, giving them a significant edge going into Election Day. Lilligren tried to show that he could connect with East African voters even if he didn't share the same cultural background. Voter turnout in the ward increased significantly since the 2009 race, and Warsame won with three times as many votes as Lilligren got in his last election. Seven new members will be sworn in next year to the city council.
Bringing people to this country who have no cultural commonality to ours is a big mistake.
Diversity is our strength!! /s
It takes a village!
Speechless.
It’s OK. Minneapolis hasn’t had any cultural commonality to the rest of the country in over 40 years.
Is a Somali negro not an African American or perhaps just a common street variety black man?
Is the article nor discriminating? profiling?
Multiculturalism at it’s best (bleccccchh)
yep, and all of them on welfare.
Somalia is equitorial and HOT, right.
Do they go to Minnie to cool off?
Or just because the liberals encourage them to come?
So much for saying the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each meeting.
And none of them steal from each other, either.
You get enough rats in one place, they will take over. This is not going to stop anytime soon and I anticipate it will spread to other areas and cultures.
“I’m an American who happens to be Somali. “
Knowing little else about the guy, I prefer that to African Americans that happen to be American.
4,000 is nothing.
The Cabrini-Green Hellhole in Chicago housed 15,000. They finally tore the last of it down in 2011. It truly was a lawless hellhole.

“Bringing people to this country who have no cultural commonality to ours is a big mistake”
Electing them as president....much bigger mistake.
*Groan*
Can’t wait to leave this state.
First we get Ellison then this piece of crap.
According to the CHA (Chicago Housing Authority), the early residents of the Cabrini row houses were predominantly of Italian ancestry.[5] By 1962, however, a majority of residents in the completed complex were black. Crime and radical culture change drove whites from the complex over the following decade; by the 1970s, its population was almost entirely black.
We had several of them where I grew up in upstate NY and they all were getting shut down as I left, same reasons. I remember driving by one, in particular, you kinda drove past it on the highway and they'd all be out playing "Midnight Basketball". I never even questioned just how frikking bizarre it was because it was just the way it always was. When I think back, I used to cut through this particularly bad street in a really bad, black part of town to get to where I lived in a more rural area outside of the city. I can't even imagine now. I would never do it at night but during the day quite regularly. Again, it was just "normal" to me back then.
Weird. Different life, different world. One I hope to never see again.
Anyhow, what leaves me speechless is we are importing this, paying for it --from Africa. Just insanity.
They even hijack elections.
It’s still ok. They don’t wake up until 5pm...
