Feds deny aid for Yosemite's Rim Fire
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 8, 2013 | By Kurtis Alexander

The federal government this week rejected Gov. Jerry Brown's request to help pay for damage caused by the Rim Fire, leaving the state and the small Sierra communities that suffered in the blaze on the hook for potentially tens of millions of dollars.

In a letter sent to the governor Monday, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said California's third largest wildfire was not severe enough to qualify as a federal disaster. As a result, Tuolumne and Mariposa counties won't get financial aid to repair roads, water systems and other damaged infrastructure.

All that aside, why is FedGov even in the business of paying for damages in the various states? Another example of a pogrom that is (as in this case) subject to political whim and which can be used as a club, or as punishment.

Better that FedGov get out of the ‘emergency management’ and ‘reconstruction aid’ business all together. Leave those funds at the State and Local levels and let the States and Localities deal with it.

At least one county (denied aid) is solid Republican

WIKIPEDIA
Tuolumne is a strongly Republican county in Presidential and congressional elections. The last Democrat to win the county was Bill Clinton in 1992.

Tuolumne County is in California’s 4th congressional district, represented by Republican Tom McClintock.[16] In the state legislature Tuolumne is in the 25th Assembly district, which is held by Republican Kristin Olsen, and the 14th Senate district, which is held by Republican Tom Berryhill.

In the 2008 presidential election, 14,988 votes were counted for John McCain with now president Barack Obama receiving 11,532 votes.[17]

The other county Nariposa is also Republican>>>>>

Mariposa is a strongly Republican county in Presidential and congressional elections. The last Democrat to win a majority in the county was Lyndon Johnson in 1964 but the last Democrat to win the county was Bill Clinton in 1992 who won a plurality.

Mariposa County is in California’s 4th congressional district, represented by Republican Tom McClintock.[8] In the state legislature Mariposa is in the 25th Assembly district, which is held by Republican Kristin Olsen, and the 14th Senate district, which is held by Republican Tom Berryhill.

On Nov. 4, 2008 Mariposa County voted 62.3% for Proposition 8 which amended the California Constitution to ban same-sex marriages.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Some might ask, with equal sense, why we would want to encourage people to build in wildfire zones. Maybe there could be a one time benefit, as long as the person builds OUTSIDE of the wildfire zone next time.

The three things that blacks fear most:

1. Ghosts.

2. Dogs with big teeth.

3. Forests with crackers inside.
