For the guy who finished third in the Virginia governors race, Robert Sarvis had a pretty good night on Tuesday. Sarvis was the Libertarian candidate in the election who pulled in just over 6.5% of the vote. This wasnt just a landmark achievement for a third party candidate in Virginia but in the entire American South.
--------------------------------------------------------------------snip-------------------------------------------
Based on the exit polls, the average Sarvis voter was a younger, well-educated, pro-choice white who did not identify with either political party. In particular, Sarvis did well in suburban Richmond and in the Shenandoah Valley. Sarviss weakest areas were in coal country in southwest Virginia, where the biracial software developer from Northern Virginia struggled to get much more than three percent of the vote.
The question, which was heavily debated before, during and after the election was where Sarvis pulled his supporters from and whether his campaign drew more votes away from Democratic governor-elect Terry McAuliffe or from the socially conservative Republican, Cuccinelli. Based on the crosstabs of a CNN exit poll, it appears that statewide, Sarvis voters leaned toward McAuliffe as their second choice. However there was a lot of regional variation. . .

And it seems liberals can coalesce around somebody with 70% agreement on the issues.
Conservatives will shred each other over 10% disputes.
If Conservatives left the RINO GOP party, the GOP would be DOA. Republicans can't win WITH the Conservatives, what could they win without them? NOTHING! Then Conservatives could negotiate, from a position of strength, with the Republicans instead of the Democrats.
It is time to leave the GOP. Third party NOW! It would grow rapidly as right leaning RINOs abandon the GOP, while independents would have a real choice.
Would a third party win the White House, the House, and a filibuster proof Senate, in it's first election? Of course NOT!
In order to build a new party, you have to get started. What better time than now?
Younger pro-choice whites, eh? Back when Rudy Giuliani was a serious possibility for the GOP nomination, this forum drew a surprising number of posters of that stripe. Wonder who they ended up supporting in the general election . . .
Smart libertarians run as conservative leaning republicans and actually win.
I'm 61. To whom do you refer?
If the Libertarian funding is with laundered Dem money, I can’t see Libertarians working too hard for D votes.
Why do republicans think they would have recieved Sarvis’ voters were he not there? If the article is to be believed Sarvis voters were young, pro abortion, and “well educated” which means they spent more time than most in lefist endoctrination camps (colleges). That seems more like a democrat demographic to me.
Conservative are about 40$ of the electorate. If we ever want to win elections, we have to convince people who call themselves libertarians and moderates to make common cause with us. How we do this and keep our core principles is the tricky part. I think the best way to accomplish this is to insist on smaller government and focus economic issues.
I don’t think it’s crap. True in more than this race.
40 percent
They didn’t care. Conservatives are persona non-grata with the RNC.
Which is why they need to be self funded entirely. If they are smart, they would realize that pure Democrats put them somewhat below cockroaches and rat infestations and so they would be working on taking Dem votes away and forming coalitions with Republicans/Conservatives. If Libertarians, small l libertarians and social conservatives have an iota of common sense, they will all figure out that they simply must be in this together when they are fighting the statist tyrants. They cannot afford to tell each other to go screw themselves anymore.
The $&@%#]*^ libertarians never get elected to anything themselves, but have sent dozens of extremist liberals to high office.
This @$$hjat received a good portion of his financial support for the Dems. Their intent was to pull as much support from Cuccinelli as possible and that is what he did. He is to the left of Cuccinelli on a number of issues and deserves a good kick in the Obama. I also blame the NRC for pulling money and giving it to Christie the RINO.
Sarvis was a libertarian?
I prefer Reagan’s idea - take over the existing party.
Well, then you're going to have to wake up.
George Will: Cuccinelli is far from the best choice for Virginia
