MANILA, Philippines (AP) - One of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded slammed into the Philippines early Friday, and one weather expert warned, "There will be catastrophic damage."
The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center shortly before Typhoon Haiyan's landfall said its maximum sustained winds were 314 kilometers per hour (195 mph), with gusts up to 379 kilometers per hour (235 mph).

These people are going to need prayer!
Didn’t come up in title a search.
Considering their ‘standby resources’ for disaster response -are a handful of military aircraft and vessels I’d say they’re going to be in bad shape. They will need international assistance after this.
From the satellite images it looks horrific and there will be a huge loss of life. I’m speechless.
Those poor folks have my prayers.
We have satellite offices in the RP and we knew about it since this morning. Our staff, as always, were told to go home.
Typhoons hit the RP average 10 times in a 3 month span and super typhoons around 5 times. the death tolls for every typhoon is around 1,000 average per 12 hours.
The difference is that Filipinos just rebuild...unlike those whiny limp-wristed Americans during the Sandy storm and Filipinos don’t need an effing’ “benefit concert” every time they get hit by one.
Prayers for anyone affected by this storm. This is horrific.
That thing is Tight Wound around the eye!
It looks very powerful and frightening.
Those arial photos of Haiyan look demonic.
God certainly doesn’t create storms like that but He does allow them for His purposes.
The president also assured the public of war-like preparations: three C-130 air force cargo planes and 32 military helicopters and planes on standby, along with 20 navy ships
Yeah, pretty meager resources.Your community will pretty
much be on its own for a bit I imagine
“The difference is that Filipinos just rebuild...unlike those whiny limp-wristed Americans..”
You are so right...
This is like 2005. The entire country was focused on Katrina. We watched it slowly make its way towards NOLA and there wasn’t a damn thing we could do about it then and it’s the same situation now. God help my bigans in the PI.
“One of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded ...”
Two things about the typhoon should be noted: first, “one of” indicate there were probably others; second, “ever records” also denotes that there were probably others that were not recorded.
Before everyone gets their global warming panties all bunched up like “Superstorm Sandy”, typhoons like this have happened before, will happen again and are not caused by global warming. They will probably cause extensive damage because there are more people located in densely populated urban localities near the ocean, are less prepared, have less survival skills, and will be mostly dependent on others to save them.
And severely chastises their makers.
Reminded me of this. Sorry..
That this is a devastating storm is apparent. Having compassion for others is a trait that some, sadly, lack.
