“Bobby Jindal and his political team totally blew it,” harrumphed one advisor for Ken Cuccinelli the morning after a closer-than-expected loss.
Cuccinelli, who narrowly lost last night’s gubernatorial election to Terry McAuliffe, was badly outspent in the days and weeks leading up to the election. The New York Times‘ Jonathan Martin described Cuccinelli’s plight as having been “close to abandoned at the end.” He was. As Politico’s James Hohmann reported, ”The Republican National Committee spent about $3 million on Virginia this year, compared to $9 million in the 2009.” And as the Roanoke Times noted, in 2009, the Chamber of Commerce spent $973,000 on Bob McDonnell, but “[t]his year, the chamber gave Cuccinelli nothing.”
But it was the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) and chairman Bobby Jindal who drew the most ire from a Cuccinelli advisor I spoke to on Wednesday morning — this, despite the fact that the RGA spent millions on the race.
“Bobby Jindal’s presidential campaign is over,” said the Cuccinelli advisor. “He screwed this up so bad. And I don’t know why. The campaign knew it was moving numbers over ObamaCare. And the RGA was not very far from that information, they could have obtained it themselves,” the advisor continued. “They should have given the money to the campaign to spend as opposed to running these stupid China ads. They just blew it.”

I thought it was the Virginia GOP-e that wanted to continue with the primary nominating process (in place before 2012) and the Tea Party wanted the change to a convention process. Are you saying it was the opposite?
My “talking points” came from discussions with friends and family in Virginia who badly wanted Cuccinelli to win, and voted for him, but were astonished to witness the ineptness of his campaign, especially with regard to “social” issues that are certain to repel many moderate and independent men and women.
How would you tell the difference, practically? With friends like them and "help" like that .....

Because at the beginning, using consultants recommended by the national GOP, Cuccinelli moderated his "tone", criticized the shutdown and Ted Cruz, and was passive in the face of attacks. It's only after he jettisoned the advice of the consultants and went on the offensive that he went from double-digits down to competitive. If he hadn't listened to the moderates in the first place (and had a little USEFUL help from the GOP), he would have won...
And that "inept" campaign was run by national GOP-e consultants, in the hopes of attracting moderates. How did that work out? The fact is that Cuccinelli won independents (a point I made that you conveniently ignored) by a ton and still lost... becausse his based got demoralized. He was always a fighter as AG, but the GOP consultants turned him into wimp. And uninformed conservatives went to the Dem plant Sarvis. His change back into a fighter happened too late to save him. I watched it happen first hand, not third hand through your friends...
