Texas Democrat Wendy Davis claimed mental health issues in court

Erick Erickson reported today on RedState that expected Democrat for governor candidate in Texas, Wendy Davis, once claimed in court her mental health was damaged by negative coverage of her city council campaign in a local newspaper. Davis, labeled as the “abortion Barbie” by some, after her filibuster of the abortion restrictions that later passed in the Texas legislature, is considered the Democrats leading candidate to run for governor of the state in 2014.

In 1996, Davis had run for city council in Fort Worth, Texas, and lost the election. She filed suit against the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for defamation.

As Erickson noted, “The Texas Court of Appeals and then the Texas Supreme Court both threw out her case. But it is worth noting that Davis, in making her case, claimed that the nasty newspaper, by virtue of criticizing her, damaged her 'mental health.'”

Regrading the mental health claim, Erickson wrote, “More worrisome regarding her mental stability, Davis sued the newspaper months after losing her city council and claimed that she 'ha[d] suffered and [was] continuing to suffer damages to her mental health.'”

The site “The Real Wendy” linked by Erickson says about the suit, “TheTexas Tribune recently noted that Wendy Davis sued the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1997 for publishing an editorial critical of Davis’ negative campaign tactics.”

Wendy Davis says she would happily sign restrictions on the Second Amendment.
