Five millions tons of debris made up of devastated property is making its way to the US following the 2011 tsunami in Japan

A floating island of debris three times the size of BRITAIN is heading for the California coastline sparking huge environmental concerns.

Five millions tons of rubbish made up of devastated homes, boats, cars and businesses is making its way across the Pacific Ocean following the 2011 tsunami in Japan.

Scientists have already discovered debris on the west coast but their latest findings suggest California is expected to be hit with a deluge all at once.

America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their latest findings showing a huge island of rubbish floating northeast of the Hawaiian Islands.

Boffins have been unable to say for certain when the debris will wash ashore but they have been closely monitoring its movements which stretches from Alaska to the Philippines.

Why don’t we just build some golf courses and resorts on it?

--noticed that too--and I believe the figure quoted was either one or five million tons.

--struck me that even five million tons of anything spread out over Texas would be a mighty thin layer---

Texas is indeed three times the size of Britain.

Come on now.

We do the best we can.

You can’t find anywhere else that has the weather, ocean, mountains, arts, sports, etc like we got.

And the weather?

Only other spot is Chile with it’s coast and mountains.

"There are a lot of good people in California."

There are. If only they could to take it back! Libs have ruined the culture, beauty and resources of the once great state.

Yeah, they should settle on a size comparison we can all agree on, like "smaller than obama's head" or something like that.

I'm trying to picture just how "thick" this debris is...it's not as if there's something the size of Texas that you could walk across without sinking, after all. Let's see: It sounds as if the debris "field" is about 300,000 square miles in size, with 5 million tons of stuff floating around. That's about 17 tons per square mile.

Not exactly a solid island, but still a lot of debris, and the larger pieces are probably navigation hazards.

Sure does. Texas’ area in square miles (268,820) divided by the area of the island of Britain (88,745) works out to about 3.03.

5 million tons is less than 2 square miles, assuming a depth of a yard.

Put another way, it is about 10-12% of the trash California produces in any given year.

Debris which has been collected with what looks to be Japanese writing on it and could be related to the Japanese tsunami.

Seriously? The Mirror couldn't locate an expert who could confirm whether or not that is, in fact, "Japanese writing" on it?

Beware a large man with “POOR IMPULSE CONTROL” tattooed on his forhead...
