Christie: Elements of Tea Party Are 'Republicans at Their Best'

As Chris Christie prepared for almost certain victory for a second term as New Jersey governor, he was sounding like his thoughts are already on the 2016 Republican presidential primaries in an interview Tuesday with CNN's Jake Tapper.

Asked whether he considers himself a member of the tea party element of the Republican Party, Christie sounded conciliatory, telling Tapper, "There are elements of the tea party that are Republicans at their best."

Tea partiers, he noted, favor limited government and individual liberty and freedom. They are tough on government spending and question the need for raising taxes.

"The core of the tea party movement, as I understand it, I think is consistent with good Republican conservatism," Christie said.

But Christie added that when some people try to use the tea party movement to try to enhance themselves politically, it can get "perverted."

"Some of the stuff that's happened of late down in Washington is not even consistent with what a lot of the real folks who started the tea party movement would agree with," Christie said.

He didn't specify whether he was talking about the 16-day government shutdown that gave Republicans a black eye. But he sounded as if he might be alluding to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas earlier in the interview when he said, "Sometimes I feel like our party cares more about winning the argument than they care about winning elections."

Cruz was criticized by establishment Republicans for leading the effort to try to force President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats to delay the individual mandate of Obamacare. Cruz said he was keeping the promises made to his constituents and not grandstanding to boost his own potential in 2016.

Like when some people use the Republican Party to enhance themselves its perverted??

Christie is probably the best we can do in New Jersey unntil the demographics change - if they ever do. But America can do better than Christie.

He'll have a couple years to lose the weight...already had the surgery...

Chris Christie "losing weight steadily," medical report says

Christie, who is seeking reelection to the governor's office in 2013 and is widely rumored to be eyeing a presidential run in 2016, has publicly acknowledged his long struggle with obesity.

In February [2013], he underwent a procedure known as lap-band surgery, which is designed to limit a patient's caloric intake by placing a rubber band around the stomach. It is considered a less dramatic alternative to gastric bypass surgery - a more invasive procedure that can permanently reduce the size of the stomach.

My folks have lived there since 94 in cape may

Followed him from the get go

Bottom line: I’ve never heard anyone kick the medias ass like he does

Nor the unions which are like Go& in NJ

He uses like two senteances and reduces them to rubble

It is quite hilarious to watch

But the bigger picture is anyone who owns real estates there is Taxed Enough Already.

And they know this former prosecutor means business

No nice guy checked pants pretty boy haircut bullshit

The reason why the Levins of the world trash him is cause they are scared if him

And they shouldn’t be. He is 15000000000 times better that B arty or the Holdebeest. God help us if she gets in

No way. It’s difficult to hide one’s past these days, Gov. Christie. You are no conservative and cannot be trusted. Stay in NJ where they love you.

This guy can be as schizophrenic as any Democrat I have ever seen. I am greatly bothered by his Democratic ability to tell you that the sh@t burger he just served you is really filet mignon and when asked later he says he’s doesn’t know about such things as he is a vegetarian

Why did NJ vote overwhelmingly for him? He is not Corzine, he is not McGreevy. Who did he run against? A Nancy Pelosi look-a-like.

He sat by on gay marriage. He had a bromance with Booker. While he beat up the public service unions, he played along with the national labor movement.

In fact, he plays both sides of the fence for his own political advantage. Yes, he is bi-partisan when it is in his own interest.

Reagan knew how to give and take for the good of the country, and he was a true gentleman. You never saw him bully his constituents. He'd stand tough against the politicians and leaders that got in the way of his ideology.

Christie is a good fundraiser, and that's what is all about. Romney didn't win, and you'd think the old guard and the RNC would learn. I guess it comes down to it's all about the money.

Businesses fleeing NY to NJ, I don't see that happening. If anything with the new minimum wage, they'll be fleeing NJ as well.

I can’t find the full exit poll on Christie’s reelection, just excerpts of it included in written articles.

I want to see how New Jersey Republicans voted.

Was their turnout lower than 2009?

How did white male Republicans vote?

How did Conservatives vote?

Was their turnout lower?

The most interesting exit poll of the night:

2016 Presidential Election - All New Jersey Voters

Hillary Clinton - 48%

Chris Christie - 44%

That’s from Edison Research, which polled for all the major networks and the Associated Press.

I guy without any self-control in eating, to the point he needs surgery, has a lot of skeletons in his closet when it comes to corruption. Especially in New Jersey.

I'm just telling you the public perception, that's all. When you have unemployed and underemployed people paying $10,000/year (and more) in local property taxes to support well-paid public employees whose unions take completely unrealistic stands against changes in their members' compensation packages that any objective third party would find reasonable, it's understandable that people would start to look upon public-sector employees as criminals.

Take it for what it's worth. Don't shoot the messenger.

Nice try, Fatso. You’re not fooling anybody (yeah, I know, he already has).

FWIW it’s not about his weight (I’m overweight but require only one time zone to stand in).

That boardwalk bromance with Obama (the second one, nothing to do with Sandy relief) said it all.

Winning a teddy bear for Obama (hurl!) See Glenn Beck on youtube for details.

http://www.ontheissues.org/governor/chris_christie_abortion.htm Christie claims to have been pro-life since hearing his daughter’s prenatal heartbeat in 1996, two years after his last donation to Planned Parenthood.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Governor/Chris_Christie_Gun_Control.htm Supports gun restrictions: “The issue which has energized me to get into this race (NJ Gov.) is the recent attempt by certain Republican legislators to repeal NJ’s ban on assault weapons.”

http://www.ontheissues.org/Governor/Chris_Christie_Immigration.htm Supports lower tuition for illegals from other countries than for legal residents from other states (and lies doing it): “I’ve never been opposed to tuition equality.”

Christie is right that elements of Tea Party values are th core of what Republicans used to stand for, but he is not Tea Party or anywhere close to it. He is a big government liberal trying to pass an a patriotic American.

Republicans who whine that what Ted Cruz did wasn't true to Republican ideals aren't offering any alternatives. If Cruz hadn't filibustered, the public would be totally unaware of how bad Obamacare is for them and the economy.

The Republican establishment seemed to not have ANY concerns about Obamacare, or spending in general, so SOMEONE had to hold Congress's feet to the fire. Cruz did exactly what the Republicans should have been doing all along; they just don't like having the voters be reminded of it.
