U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday said the Justice Department has not decided whether to file federal civil rights charges against George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman, a volunteer neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Martin in an incident that captured national interest, was acquitted of murder charges in July. But the Justice Department could still pursue a federal civil rights case.
Holder said the agencys investigation is under way.
I'm not sure exactly how much longer that will take, but we will get to a point where we are able to make a determination, he told reporters at an unrelated news conference at the agencys headquarters.
Holder, during an April speech to Al Sharptons National Action Network, pledged to take appropriate action if the agency finds evidence of a potential federal civil rights crime in the Zimmerman case.
However, he has since cautioned that the Justice Department faces a very high barrier in pursuing federal criminal charges in such cases.
On Monday, he noted that the courts had already weighed in Zimmermans case.
"The case of George Zimmerman and what happens there I think a substantial part was resolved in the case that was tried," Holder said.
Good, they’re finally going to charge Trayvon posthumously for aggravated stalking, attempted murder, possession of burglary tools ...
Never were truer words said!
It's not only double jeopardy, it's the very definition of tyranny as experienced by the Founding Fathers.
King George and his thugs didn't have enough brass to lie bald-faced about what they were up to when they went after their American colonial enemies.
The criminal Holder can call his "charges" against Zimmerman what he likes, but the fact remains that in Police State America, you can find a felony charge to pin on a peasant all day, every day:
Three Felonies a Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent
The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day. Why? The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have not only exploded in number, but, along with countless regulatory provisions, have also become impossibly broad and vague. In Three Felonies a Day, Harvey A. Silverglate reveals how the federal criminal justice system has become dangerously disconnected from common law traditions of due process and fair notice of the law's expectations, enabling prosecutors to pin arguable federal crimes on any one of us, for even the most seemingly innocuous behavior. The dangers spelled out in Three Felonies a Day do not apply solely to''white collar criminals,'' state and local politicians, and professionals. No social class or profession is safe from this troubling form of social control by the executive branch, and nothing less than the continued functioning and integrity of our constitutional democracy hang in the balance.
I, for one, am sick of the swaggering, snide posturing of The King's Men and their little jackboot police state.
The clock is ticking on those charges —
Could be even worse, could be grounds for any American who so much as politely critiques someone from a special interest group having their lives turned upside down, if they are lucky, on any kind of civil rights charge the feds can come up with. And charging ordinary Americans with whatever crime they can think of is one area where the feds, particularly nowadays, lead the way in innovation.
So glad you were there!
I was trying up to the last minute to go, but have not been feeling well and didn’ t have the energy.
I hope it was well attended
There is no basis for any charge. Zimmerman was never a racist and his prior life showed he was pro helping blacks.
He went to the prom itch a black girl. Tutored black children. Voted democrat often I am sure.
That’s what I was thinking!
All fast and furious matters to be postponed until he makes this vital decision, and whether or not to have OSHA close Sea World until there’s a run on the parent company’s stocks, because CNN keeps showing that movie.
Meanwhile, Bengazi, IRS, NSA, Presidiential, and other un-Constitutional government abuses, are still overlooked...
Ohhh, wait...I forgot...I’m a racist...
I should be prosecuted for this post...
Holder needs to look into some of the 500 murders of young black men in Chicago... it’s a better way for him to spend his time...
Keep the fire stoked.
He would have to CARE first.
Hello Guen,
It was standing room only!!!
