Kathleen Murphy, a Democrat who is running for the House of Delegates against Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock, told a forum in Great Falls on Saturday that doctors should be forced to accept Medicare and Medicaid patients:
FYI last night at the Great Falls Grange debate, Democrat delegate candidate Kathleen Murphy said that since many doctors are not accepting medicaid and medicare patients, she advocates making it a legal requirement for those people to be accepted.
She did not recognize that the payments are inadequate to cover the doctors' costs. She also did not recognize there is a shortage of over 45,000 physicians now and that it is forecast to be 90,000 in a few years.
Democrats appear to want to make physicians slaves of the state, but Democrats don't admit they would just drive more doctors out of practice into retirement and other occupations. The Obamacare law and regulations are causing millions of people to lose their health insurance, drop many doctors and hospitals. The HHS internal forecast is 93 million Americans would lose their health insurance due to the Obamacare law and rules about adequacy of insurance.

Just put up some good fences along the borders, and don’t issue exit permits to the doctors, and it should work. There should still be some folks in the eastern parts of Europe that could consult on the program. For example, you might allow the doctors to travel out of state if they left some loved ones behind as security for their return as provided on the travel papers.
You could also just say to the folks pushing this idea; “You want my mind? Try and take it.”
socialism is so wonderful, you have to be forced into it.
A cardinal rule of medicine is that if doctors do not want to treat a patient, they do not have to, and they do not have to cite any reason whatsoever.
But then again, before HIPAA there used to be a sacrosanct doctor-patient confidentiality. W. Bush decided that terrorist doctors and terrorist patients had to be stripped of that confidentiality, or the terrorists would win. So now every two-bit cop with an attitude, all the way up to the Attorney General and his Just Us Department can read your medical files whenever they want to.
So yeah, enslaving doctors will happen if they want to. They may even try to pass some law restricting doctors from leaving the state unless they post bond or leave their families as hostages or something.
Medical tourism will become a big part of Americans health-care
But you lose even more on a patient who doesn't pay a pre-deductible copayment or one where the insurance company denies payment.
Also, I have never understood why some practices can afford to see significant numbers of Medicaid/Medicare patients and others can't. Differences in overhead, time spent with patients, type of practitioner who actually sees the patient, minimum earnings expectation... what is the explanation?
They never learn. Doctors will simply move to other states or other countries which have parallel private/public systems.
It’s not just Kathleen Murphy who believes this. So does Terry “The Bag Man” McAufule.
A vote for him is a vote to set Virginia back.
Can any lawyer out there help us out the the proper legal definition of slavery?
The sad part is that women voters (judging from the ones at work) will think this is a great idea.
Slavery: is a man who does not own his labor
Lol. I doubt even the den liberal trash could find a way to legalize slavery again.
If you have a right to my labor then I am a slave.
Once thought that book was merely hypothetical. But that was at a time when society was still permeated with judeo-Christian values, and even politicians had to bow to them. No more.
“Democrats don’t admit they would just drive more doctors out of practice into retirement and other occupations”
Just make it illegal for people to change occupations and make it impossible for anyone to save for their own retirement. Problem solved!/s
Yes, but if Virginia instituted that requirement for all new students upon application to state medical schools, it's going to be years (it takes 4 years pre-med college, then 4 years of med school + 3 years of residency just for Family Practice) before the first newly-conscripted doctor sees his or her first patient. Plus no doctor who graduated from a medical school outside of Virginia would ever locate there. If this policy was instituted nationally, there is still no way to force doctors practice clinical medicine. There are an increasing number of alternative career options to clinical medicine. There are more physicians in Congress now than I can ever remember. Individuals who can pass med school gross anatomy and biochemistry generally aren't stupid. They can find other ways to earn a good living.
Some people in IT were considering that in CA awhile back, I don’t know what became of the idea. Maybe they just moved to TX.
This woman knows she can’t nor can the state do this.
This is red meat for her base
Wondering if Indian Reservations will pick up the slack and set up medical sanctuaries (Of course there are profits to be had).
You can’t win, you can’t break even, you can’t even get out of the game.
Few doctors refuse Medicare, and many could not keep their doors open without Medicare patients. Require that Medicaid be accepted to be able to bill other patients to Medicare would put docs in quite bind.
