Try living on food stamps this month

Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?

That’s the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.

Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.

Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. You’ll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.

At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. That’s part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.

That mac/cheese casserole stuff is what hubby takes to work for lunch sometimes. It’s great isn’t it?

That and a small salad and he’s good.

Let me use the 4.50 to buy shotgun shells and I’ll bet that 4.50 could feed me for a month.

the 4.50 figure is a sham.

thgere are people quoted in tese articles getting over 600 bucks a month in food welfare. even with four people that’s 5 bucks a day and you can feed a family of four well on 20 bucks a day.

thgese people werebitching they were going to have tobuy cannedfruit and veggies instead of fresh. I BUY FRIGGIN canned fruits and veggies and i am paying for their damn food.

Yes it is great. Although, I try to limit the carbs to keep my triglycerides in line. Mac and cheese is one of my all time favorite comfort foods.LOl

How much more should the makers give? It’s not just the “nutrition” being supplemented here, how about health care, housing, transportation, abortion, birth control, entire lives are being supplemented by the millions

I have a Basset hound. he thinks he’s small dog. Tries to sleep on your lap, it’s funny watching him, but he can manage to get on the bed with out something to step up on.

Girls love him. Thankfully, my wife loves me and him :)

Ya, I hear you on the carbs. Hubby likes it because it’s so versatile. He found some hams (spiral sliced no less!) in the managers special corner and we cooked one and the little fiddly bits that didn’t look like they would fit on a sandwich got chopped up and added to a batch of that stuff. With a couple ounces of real cheese and some cream cheese. And a part of a chopped onion and some chopped bell pepper and seasoning to taste. Yum Yum.

I think the main reason the fed-ed stopped teaching home ec in the 70’s and 80’s was to foster this type of food dependence. They don’t KNOW how to cook from scratch. And being 2 and nearly 3 generations out from that would feel put upon if you asked them to do it.

One of my cousins (in her early 20’s) didn’t realize how much cheaper it was to make cookies from scratch than buy the slicenbake ones. She was pricing out the bags of ingredients in her head and totalling that for the cost of cookies. Not realizing she’d have most of that stuff left over for other stuff when she was done. That generation had moms who worked and bought convenience stuff because they were tired and just plain too busy to do it. The moms didn’t teach cooking and the schools didn’t teach it anymore either. To my cousin the $15 she’d spend on ingredients for the homemade cookies was WAY more than the $3.50 for the slicenbake ones. No one had ever told her about ‘per serving’ costs and how to budget using raw ingredients. She does this same ‘cost analysis’ with raw ingredients for hamburgers vs. drive thru. I’m not sure how we fix this. She is VERY unwilling to learn. She’s addicted to the quick fix and she’s not even on assistance from the government.

3 years ago I feel on my ass and 2 weeks after that my wife was told her medical issues had progressed to the point she had to stop working.. We ended up on assistance for 6 months.

I could not believe the amount of money they gave us per month.

To those of you that helped me out during those tough times. Thank you.

Here’s a good one. Box of elbow macaroni, can of Campbells Bean and Bacon Soup. Cook macaroni, mix with soup and small amount of water. Salad. Dinner under $4.

When I ran a job-seeking class for welfare and food stamp recipients, I had to make sure to tell them that waiting for the cable TV guy was not a valid excuse not to attend.

Where did you buy a gallon of milk for $1.99? Not in my neck of the woods. You can get 1/2 gallon for $1.99. A carton of 18 eggs is $2.79. The prices you listed are way too low - even at the dollar store.

I don’t doubt one thing you wrote about some of the people you’ve encountered. However, we can’t be the food police - by doing so - we are no better than the libs we scream about trying to control our lives.

Oh I know.. I use to be the guy they were waiting on..

To some. Cable was more important than cleaning, feeding the kid or changing it’s 10 pound diaper.

It’s one of the reasons I quit 15 years ago.

I am sure it never got better.

There’s a difference between just telling someone what to do because you’re a nosy busybody and their literally stealing the food out of your babies mouths.

I don’t care what they eat. As long as they don’t steal from my wallet to do it.

You want to feed them steaks and oreos and cokes? Write the checks out of your own checkbook.

All this whining about how they’re starving to death is belied by the fact that they’re almost universally overweight. Logic FAIL. I grew up in Africa. Poor starving people are NOT fat. Which means not only are they lazy, they’re dishonest as well.
