Try living on food stamps this month
The Columbian ^ | November 2, 2013 | Staff

Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?

That’s the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.

Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.

Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. You’ll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.

At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. That’s part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.

Here they’re doing two “premium” sandwiches (Whopper, Original Chicken, Pulled Pork, Alaskan Fish) for $5. It must be popular, they’ve been extending it for months now.

you like bacon, ok.

i haven’t been to a wendy’s in years and years.
it used to be pretty good, so maybe i should try it again

the big rage seems to be In and Out Burgers.
I went there ONCE.
they say everything is made fresh to order, which is a good idea. the burger on that one day was OK, not superduper but better than McD’s (which isn’t saying a great deal, IMHO).

I intended to go back and try it again, as it seemed reasonably promising, but they have such a queue of cars impinging on the place that they have to hire kids as parking lot traffic directors. Which is to say, its just too crowded getting In and Out of In and Out, for my taste in life.

but you may find an In and Out that’s more accessible...

that sounds like a fairly decent deal.
I do like places that give you a reasonable price on things.
you can take one home for the next day, too.

the BK fish was a bit crunchier for my personal taste, but a good enough sandwich. I think it must not cost much more than that normally, though?

I think these drive thru places have some reasonable prices and I do go there occasionally. (I can still make healthier, I think, food at home for less... but we have to “live it up” once in awhile, if only for a change of routine.

the last time I went to BK I ordered the double whopper with cheese and took half of it home, appetite not being what it used to be.

i do try to avoid the soda pops. not good for you. you should see them sometimes when you ask for a (free) glass of water. ha . “Water? what’s water?” but they do manage to produce it on request.

my Dad used to forbid me soda pops. I am glad he did. He gave me bad enough teeth without any more cavities from sugar sodas, ha!

$4.50 a day? Still enough to keep many from getting a job.

Try the pulled pork if they have it there. Not bad. I’ve always liked their original chicken sandwich, just can’t afford it now.

that is a good price, if any good of course.
sometimes the supermarket puts their large boxed frozen pizzas on offer at 2/$5. that’s a very good price so long as your selection does not include (or you decide not to worry about) the Mystery Meat they use ...

the very best quality lunch at the cheapest price (and they taste GREAT!) are the $1.50 all beef hotdogs (or you can have a Polish sausage) at Costco! You can still get saurkraut to put on it (you just have to ask for the little containers of same when you order) and they let you load up on relish, mustard, onions, and katsup ... and they let you have all the sugar sodas you can drink... all for $1.50.

I just love their hot dogs they have excellent flavor and are not the cheap kind they serve at most places.

they also sell big slices of hot pizza for $1.50 (reasonably decent quality, not as good as Round Table but better than most other places), and a friend advises they have a new brisket of beef sandwich with cole slaw inside it for $ 4 or $5 .. that he likes a LOT... but that is three of their great hot dogs so I do not know if I will ever get past the dogs to try the new menu item. ha!

I sometimes drive over there just for a hot dog.

pork and bacon are not good for you.

just my 2cents worth.

try their fish sandwich maybe?

(IN and Out claims to serve healthy food, I don’t know... see what you think...
of course pictures always look better than the actual meals, ha!

Pork, bacon, whatever are okay in moderation. My wife, thankfully, is a good cook and can throw together something good in a few minutes. The only time I would eat that $1 burger is if I’m more than 30 minutes from home or in a huge rush.
