When I visited Yellowstone, I saw recommendations not to feed the wildlife, along with explanations of why it is a bad idea. When they are fed, they lose the ability to forage for themselves and they become aggressive when they do not receive handouts. A wild animal that has become accustomed to handouts is far more dangerous than a wild animal that fends for itself.

It seems to me that these characteristics apply equally well to people who are conditioned to depend on handouts.
