If one believes the backers of Washington State Initiative 522, Tuesdays vote is simple commonsense: Its about the right to know whats in our food...
To be clear the Just Label campaign is not an anti-GMO effort, says Gary Hirshberg, founder of organic food maker Stonyfield Organic, and head of Just Label It...
But in less guarded moments, Hirshberg makes it clear that the labeling movement has nothing at all to do with science, information and discourseit is exclusively an anti-GMO effort...

Uh-oh, better get the Obamacare people involved!!!

GMOs are used in biological and medical research, production of pharmaceutical drugs, experimental medicine (e.g. gene therapy), and agriculture
What no response? just more insults.
I bet you work for Monsato.
Uh, you just called me a GMO freak, then complain about namecalling? What you are is a hypocrite and a liar.
Go take your GMO-produced pharmaceuticals and STFU.
You have no argument, just insults. You know nobody wants your crap and know that only the govt has the power to force people to eat it.
We don’t need GMO. The food conglomerates want it so they can control the food supply.
I want to know whether the food I eat is GMO. Dont I have a right to know what Im eating?
people like you need a rope and a tall tree
“You have a right, grow your own, buy organic.”
Why? What is wrong with labeling it? Why do you seek to force something on people using the power of govt?
The hunger in Africa has NOTHING to do with lack of food and GMO certainly won’t cure it. The hunger in Africa is caused by corrupt govt. Kinda the same thing you are pushing with this.
*************************
Yes.
Many here seem to disagree with you and are happy to use the power of govt to enforce it.
Doesn’t sound conservative to me.
If it were so great wouldn’t they prominently display it on the label? Like the ‘splenda’ logo on the low carb stuff?
‘proudly made with genetically modified corn! Saving the planet and feeding mankind one kernel at a time!’
Or some such.
They could even sell the right to display a GMO-PROUD logo of some sort.
Why? What is wrong with labeling it? Why do you seek to force something on people using the power of govt?
People with full stomachs have much time to complain. GMO and govt and corruption are related. Do you really want govt controlling your food?
We’re paying people not to grow corn and they say this is needed to keep people from starving.
Gotcha. I lived in Africa. They’re starving because of war, discord and dictators. Starving out your opponent is a tactic in the ongoing tribal genocide there.
Has nothing to do with this or that crop variety. Roundup ready soybean seeds aren’t much good if you can’t afford the roundup too.
“My issue is that govt is your only answer. Find your own solution. Did you miss that part.”
I have a solution. Keep GMO out of the food supply, period.
“People with full stomachs have much time to complain. GMO and govt and corruption are related. Do you really want govt controlling your “
Ahh so you’re doing this for the staving? Then why are you pushing it for the US? Is lack of GMO really a reason for people not having food in the US? Heck its not even why people in Africa are starving.
People in Africa area starving because of political instability and the fact their govt sells the food aid they receive from the west instead of giving it to hungry people.
Apparently, the labeling laws that have been written have been overly complicated, incomplete at the same time not complete enough.
Raising GMO grain is a mess. No one should want it in their area.
We have seen some examples out here in WA and Oregon, where Monsanto had test farms years ago. After lying fallow for years and being recently sold, the new farmer found that no matter what he did, he was still raising GMO grain and being sued by Monsanto. He never planted the GMO grain, but he couldn’t get rid of it and Monsanto wouldn’t let him sell it without paying them a fee.
Please, give me an example of a food--plant or animal--grown by humans that is NOT genetically modified. I certainly can't think of one. Furthermore, no one is forcing you to eat genetically modified food--if you are so set on avoiding it, no one is stopping you from going out into the wilderness and gathering whatever plants, seeds, and wild game you want to consume.
BTW, thank you for once again illustrating that the left has no monopoly on emotion-driven irrational beliefs.
I happen to live in WA, voted Yes on 522 and mailed my ballot yesterday. I am particular about my food and have been since I knew I could be. I’ve always been a label reader and been interested in nutrition all my life.
One thing I never believed was that margerine was good for the body. Our government told us it was better than butter or other oils for your heart. Now our government says they were wrong. How many people were harmed by eating margerine over so many years?
Once Monsanto and Roundup have contaminated all our foodstuffs and croplands & patented every seed available to you to grow a tomato in your backyard so you can’t grow anything BUT GMO crops, will we find out that we have been poisoning ourselves with government complicity for years with GMO foods? There was a recent case in Oregon where Monsanto had planted a GMO crop years ago as an experiment. Now non GMO seeds were planted but the GMO crop was still there transforming the crop into something foreign nations wouldn’t buy.
I want to have the right to thoughtfully choose my food. If I want I can buy Hamburger Helper filled with GMOs and mix it with meat which has been fattened with GMO corn, or I can make my own meal from ingredients which have not been modified and meat which was fed grass. Is that not an aspect of freedom that all Americans should have?
What about genetically modifying a salmon? When will the scientists playing God with our food come to an end?
I know I don’t trust them with mine any more than I trust Obama with my choice in health insurance.
