TEXAS - Jory Enck is apparently a slow reader. About 3 years ago, he checked out a G.E.D study guide from a library in Copperas Cove. Last week police arrested him on a warrant for not returning library materials. The city ordinance was passed to crack down on delinquent readers.

How 'bout an open thread for "equal treatment" subjects.
I'll open with: "Jail for all IRS employees owing delinquent taxes"
Fire away...

I know that was a bit excessive but the books in the library were bought with tax money (you could argue that he’d paid part of the price) but look at it this way - you don’t return a book and that’s like stealing. If you tried to shoplift you’d be arrested as well. What if people just decided not to return books ... how long will your library last? Just an opinion.

"Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before -- flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking... Why's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.... Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world. What about that kid, sitting down, opening a book right now in a branch of the local library and finding pictures of pee-pees and wee-wees in The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers. Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld... Maybe that's how you get your kicks... You and your goodtime buddies... I've got a flash for you, joy boy. Partytime is over."

Yeah, this thread has gone sideways. I agree.
I’ll throw down #2 (equal application):
“Citizen Bench Warrants for Neighbors that don’t return tools” </sarc>
C’mon...seriously? The rest of you guys support ‘stop & frisk’ AND being pulled over for a ‘rolling stop’ and getting arrested for a Warrant for an OVERDUE library book? Are you freaking kidding me? Public shaming would be FAR more effective.
Ok, fine. Gave me an excuse to break out the bottle...

Man Jailed For Overdue Library Book A book due last week is overdue. A book due three years ago is stolen. People get jailed everday for stealing things. A library book is no different.

In the state of Texas you can ventilate a man fort stealing your property.
You can ventilate him for stealing your neighbors property.
Personally, I would never do it, but it is legal in Texas.
We view stealing a mans property as stealing his livelihood and works.

Steal a car in west Texas, and the guy you steal it from is likely to die before he gets to where there is enough water to sustain life.
Stealing in Texas is close to murder.
