Smokers younger than 21 in the nation's biggest city will soon be barred from buying cigarettes after the New York City Council voted overwhelming Wednesday to raise the tobacco-purchasing age to higher than all but a few other places in the United States.
City lawmakers approved the bill which raises from 18 to 21 the purchasing age for cigarettes, certain tobacco products and even electronic-vapor smokes and another that sets minimum prices for tobacco cigarettes and steps up law enforcement on illegal tobacco sales.
"This will literally save many, many lives," said an emotional City Councilman James Gennaro, the bill's sponsor, whose mother and father died from tobacco-related illnesses. "I've lived with it, I've seen it...but I feel good today."

Here’s an idea, let’s just declare tobacco a controlled substance and be done with it.
Just switch marijuana for tobacco and tobacco for marijuana. That ought to do it. LOL
The continued infantilization of the populace is part of the liberal agenda. Live at home on your mom’s insurance until 26. Can’t drink or smoke until 21. Diapers until elementary school. Suck on the teat of the government for life.
Don’t think of it as nanny-statism - think of it as full-employment legislation for the Mob.
This mythical world of “21” is always a curious thing with me. Why not “24”? Why not “20”?
Why not make things interesting by denying anyone a license until age “18”? Why not limit voting to the age of “21” or more? Why not limit credit cards to only those over “21”? Why not limit marriage to “21”? Why not limit the NBA to players who are “21” or older? Can’t we limit senators to the age of “65” and then force them to retire?
Tobacco has been taking body blows since the feds passed law in 1965 from federal, state, and local governments, even Obama’s administration has signed new federal anti-tobacco laws.
Somehow the libertarians never got much passion for this plant, and law.
Did you know that the Vatican doesn’t allow cardinals over 79 to vote on a new pope in a conclave?
Someone should remind Noo Yawk that life was a whole lot more civil and free when everyone smoked cigs, packed heat, and chased skirts.
Maybe the Council would do well to long for the old days...
I remember in Rockland County, which is on the state line with NJ, the drinking age in NJ was raised to 21 while it remained 18 in NY. Anytime my buddies and I would hit the bars and liquor stores on a Friday or Saturday night, the parking lots would be filled with cars with NJ plates.
That should be the new slogan for all Democrats.
Their supporters willingly understand.
This will literally save many, many lives,” said an emotional City Councilman James Gennaro, the bill’s sponsor, whose mother and father died from tobacco-related illnesses. “I’ve lived with it, I’ve seen it...but I feel good today.”
This isn’t going to save lives! I don’t smoke, never have, but this is ridiculous.
But the same government promotes homosexual activity at the earliest possible age.
Back in the 40’s, my Grandmother told my then 20 Year Old Mother to be that Cigarettes were Coffin Nails.
Now, how can that be? There were no Cigarette Health Studies and Cigarette Advertising was everywhere.
Clueless, when Mindless just doesn’t cut it anymore and Helpless is the preferred option.
Yes, I’d like to know the same thing. Men don’t seem to be made of the same stuff our/their forefathers were! Sooooooo tired of these bass turds forcing their ideas and beliefs onto the public. Where will it end????? In 20 years will we all be required to buy a treadmill and check in with the gov. our exercise quotas? Will we have a gov. dept that we send in our grocery receipts too to make sure we’ve purchased our fruits and veggies?
16 yr. old can legally operate a potentially deadly weapon,18 yr. olds can go to war and blow people up or BE blown up, they can get married and have babies, basically they are considered ADULTS at 18 legally. So how can they LEGALLY pass a law forbidding them to purchase a legal item?
Biggest mistake they made was lowering the Voting age to 18.
Black market cigarette salesmen thank the NY City Council for the boost in business.
I'm sure that nanny statist liberals already have that legislation cued up and ready to go. It's only a matter of time before it's introduced in Congress.
It wasn't a mistake from the Commie's point of view. They knew full well that graduates from 12 years of leftist public school indoctrination would vote for Socialism like it was free candy.
And here we are, forty years later. Ain't it grand?
