Elderly people unable to afford fuel bills advised to heat only their living rooms during daytime this winter.
Research by the charity Age UK has found potentially fatal consequences from living in poorly heated housing.
Cold temperatures endanger the elderly by increasing the risk of flu, chest infections and other respiratory problems, and their severity.
Fewer than one in 10 Britons aged 65 and over are aware that strokes can be brought on by the cold in winter, with only 14 per cent recognising that the cold can impact on heart attacks.
Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director of Age UK, said Being cold, even for just a short amount of time can be very dangerous as it increases the risk of associated health problems and preventable deaths during the winter.
Living room temperatures should ideally be kept at 70F (21C) and above whereas bedroom temperatures should be kept at a minimum of 64F (18C), according to international guidelines (from WHO).
Official advice issued last week told elderly people unable to afford fuel bills to heat only their living rooms during daytime this winter.

Thanks to Laurel for this link
Theyd be better advised to sleep and stay in the one room says Laurel.
And while mentioning power prices the author failed to mention WHY power is unaffordable.
Or query why? Why will so many die if its supposed to be no snow ever again and warming fast
?
BS
Wish I could ship them the heat from here.

It is getting nicer though.
Almost time to open the windows.
It better be a big room if it has to hold 24,000 people.
Well...100,000 cattle died in western SD a few weeks ago in a blizzard.
Maybe the UK will be next!
Burn the BS that comes out of Univ. of East Anglia. Hockey sticks, too.
Sorry.. Hockey sticks were Penn State.
People die.
People die because it is cold.
24K?
Coal is evil! Get on the Bandvagon!
Sorry, day late and a dollar short as usual. ;-)
With government subsidized heat no one will ever die....
Live by Socialism.....die by Socialism. Old-age pensioners are constant targets in the UK. When I lived there...I can remember reports of yobs sniffing through the mailboxes on doors to see if an elderly person lived at the residence. LITERALLY SMELLING. If they detected the ‘scent’......they invaded the home with a baseball bat.
God forbid they invest in modern nuke reactors that can drop the price of electricity substantially. Or at least maintain proven energy production until *after* pie-in-the-sky wind and solar projects start actually showing positive return. No, instead they’ll burn all their energy “bridges” and not look back, and if folks die due to lack of planning, well that’s just the price of progress, right?
At least here in India, they have a (feeble) excuse that energy production has never been that reliable, so it’s expected (though unfortunate) that cold(ish) weather does mean exposure deaths. And this year there are already rumors that this winter will be particularly chilly (unusually long monsoon plus lingering effects of the cyclone).
“Cold temperatures endanger the elderly by increasing the risk of flu, chest infections and other respiratory problems, and their severity.”
It’s not as though they’re freezing to death. I’m willing to bet that their criteria for cold related deaths are BS.
Of course it's absurd. I'm too tired and lazy to try to decipher what this group's actual agenda is, but if they're making up crap like that, it's gotta be a doozy.
Just think of the heat that will be generated by burning 24,000 dead bodies!
That will solve the heat crisis, but Soylent Green prodution will suffer.
Briton seems to have plenty of money to throw at their Muslim immigrants and welfare cases.
I always keep a copy of the "WHO's International Guidelines to Heating Your Home" on my coffee table. Otherwise I wouldn't have a clue where to set my thermostat. Can you believe in the old days I would go by my sense of being too cold or too warm to set my thermostat? Luckily, those old-fashioned days are behind me now that I've been enlightened by my betters.
